More of the old "In & Out" --- Just a test fit on the dash panel, shifter, steering column and brake set up. It will all have to come back out (again) but I need to make sure everything will clear everything else. Will hopefully be finalizing the tricky brake bell cranks today and have that system ready to lock down in a day or so.

Tight fit in the footwell but so far all looks workable. Once I have all that OK'd for location, I can paint the dash/firewall and move on to some other little issues that need to be handled. The overhead gauge panel is giving me a headache...too many subtle curves!

Looking fine. My very similar looking shifter ended up on the floor to the left of the drivers seat--I wanted to keep the original steel dash and all the gauges are right where your shifter is. I neither thought of how nice a wood dash would look nor that the gauges could be set overhead. Jack

I like the gauges up high.. I have my electronic gaugues right up in front of me.. the factory gauges are so low they are tough to see.. and with a diesel i like to see stuff front n center..

Howdy Guys --- I really can't take any credit for being creative on the gauge location. There simply isn't room anywhere else. But as Chris noted...I do like the idea of having them almost straight ahead. Now I just need to work out all those curvy lines in metal and/or wood. A little more flame Maple might look good up there.

Spent part of yesterday wrapping up the brake bell crank system with my car builder buddy then on to more dash/steering related things and a re-design of my throttle cable mount. The old cable mount had been modded once but was conflicting with access to some other items. Mainly, the Saginaw hydraulic pump for PS & PB.

Found a couple of unused threaded holes on the front of the Bosch fuel injection pump and fabbed a quick bracket for the throttle cable.

The old mount was a large doohickey that came up from below and made access to many things a bear. This clears up some space for trying to deal with the next issue...getting hydraulic lines to and from the pump.

This is the back of the pump with the old cable bracket still in place. Having it out of the way helps, but we are still so close to the motor mount that getting a hydraulic hose into the pump is going to require a miracle fitting without the need to chop a chunk out of the motor mount.

Fingers crossed as we search for that fitting.

Tango,

I'm drooling over your dash and am in awe of the engineering under the hood. Truly mind-blowing! When you're done that is a piece of history that will be rolling down the highway....

I nominate Shorty as a national historic (rolling) monument!!!!

Anyone second the motion (pardon the intended pun... )??????

Tango,
This to be similar to the design you are thinking of for the bed/couch?

Thanks to all for the kind words.

And yes Guido...pretty much the same design for my sofa/sleeper. No room for a "full-time" bed. That one looks almost identical to the toy version I showed you. They did a really nice job on it. Hope mine turns out so well.

A few more items moved ahead...

Tried out the Isuzu steering column covers, turn signal lever and light & wiper switches just for fit. Looks like I may be able to use them all which puts me a little ahead. Just have to sort out all the wiring (which I am NOT good at).

Now have all the brake system bellcranks I designed put together. The guy who helped with the machining did a great job. Massively overbuilt, all with bronze bushings and zerk fittings for grease. This is the upper section that comes off the brake pedal...

...that mechanism pushes down on this, the second bellcrank which goes through the frame & fishplate.
Was hard to get a pic..harder still when drilling a 2" hole and welding under there.

This is where it comes through on the outside of the frame and connects to the hydroboost master. Can you look at my welding and tell where I was when the big blob of molten metal landed on chest?

Then there is this...

The Official Skoolie WTFISIT Quiz of the day.

If you've been following this build, you may have noticed that way back when, I decided to use a vintage bass drum pedal for my throttle pedal.

Ok...but...

..what is that weird, black doohickey thing I just added that is sticking up?

Entry Rules:
One entry per household. The first correct response will win either a Free, all expenses paid vacation for two to Hawaii...or...be invited to read my entire build thread from beginning to end right here on Skoolie.net !

My guess is some sort of cruise control set/release thingamajig, artfully crafted just like every other little thing on this beauty.

And I've already read your entire thread, so I guess I default to the vacation option instead?

I will buy marc's reply!

Old racers trick. Put a tab or loop on the gas pedal. If the return spring on the throttle fails and the engine sticks wide open, you can manually pull it back to idle with your toe. In fact, many racing authorities require them.

This was a suggestion from my race car builder buddy.

Congrats marc...you are now welcomed to read my entire build thread!

BTW...
I was at Daytona in the late '70's when the throttle on Kenny Roberts Yamaha TZ750 stuck wide open. He ran off the track on an infield turn, did a couple of brodies in the grass...got back onto the track and finished the lap. With that bike screaming the whole time. He controlled the speed with the kill switch. Scary. Really scary...and insane!

I spent 18 years as a NASCAR short track racer, 2 Championships (2003 & 2006), with 60 feature wins, so Ya, I know what that is. Now the big leagues all have a kill button the steering wheel. Did Kenny forget how to use the clutch? I will read your whole thread, but not today, sites been pretty active today and I can't get sh*t done. 2 hours behind on UFC Fight Night and can't get back to it while i'm participating here and power texting with the family. Seems my Dad received a Long Valued Service award from the IEEE after 60 plus years. Unfortunately it came 5 months after he passed away, they didn't know. My brother received the plaque today.
I did wash the Argosy today though, spent a year in the woods collecting mildew and mold and moss.:

I always thought those old Argosy's were kinda cool looking. No idea how they are built or powered (?).

454 Chevy, only made them 4 years (74-7. My buddies been looking for one for a long time, taxed me to find him one. Thought he had me stumped till I found this one 37 miles from my house. They really are extremely hard to find.
Way too small for my tastes.

Hey Tango, good idea on the throttle return, had the throttle spring brake on my grandmother's car thankfully while I was driving and not her. Was an all manual car so threw it in neutral and killed it then coasted to the shoulder.
Oh, I love your pedal, found a pair years ago and am saving them for a future build.
As for your wiring skill, as long as you don't release the smoke from the wires you are good to go.
