Hmmmm...I'l have to take another look. I'd have sworn the last cans I got had "Rustoleum" on them but were definitely labeled "Hammerite"... not "Hammered".

Hard to keep up with all the corporate buyouts.

I'm still pissed off that I can't find Coon Brand Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese anymore. They got bought out and the bean counters must have changed the recipe cause the new stuff is not remotely sharp. Sucks when a good old brand goes away like that.

Tango - so whats the deal with the trans? I saw something about allison not approving it? allison seems not to take kindly to anyone doing anything custom with their transmissions... S&S though should have your back on the warranty id think since the trans hasnt actually been In-serviced yet..

I have used the rustoleum Hammered-finish on some A/C vents in a friend's house to give them that 'Modern but old' look and so far they have held up well... one thing for sure that paint takes a long time to truly cure and get any kind of durability.. the first vent we did, he dropped it in the floor after a couple days and it didnt hold up well to being stepped on at all.. so after a month we dropped the other one we had painted in the floor and its held up great....

According to Stewart & Stevenson, the warranty is in full force We did not have a finished weight at the time it was ordered but my little rig is WAY below the rating on that trans so I am not concerned.

And you are absolutely right about the Hammerite. A "Full Cure" take 14 days! And it does make a world of difference. Can be hard at times to remain patient but that's what it takes. Might be OK to rush a bit on something like a dash, but anything that will see direct wear you really need to wait on.

And I just got my tranny cooler from Earls and will be fabbing a hanger for it. Planning on putting it under the bus near the driver side wall and adding a small scoop to direct air over it. No fan right no but I am leaving room for one should it look like it needs it. The Earl's unit is a 40 row plate & bar type and the most efficient they make so hopefully the Allie will be happy with it.

Yes, I know...without pix etc., etc. Will try and get some later today.

I would think your rig is way under the weight rating of a 2000. (or 1000 for that matter).. these transmissions are used in busses pushing 28k GVWR.

the big issues (that were resolved) in the earlier 1000s (affected 2000s too).. was not enough clutch apply pressure to the 5th gear clutch.. so pushing too much power at it could actually spin (and glaze) that clutch making the issue worse.. the duramaxx guys putting even modest 100 HP tunes on their trucks learned this the hard way.. the factory got it right starting in 2006 and fixed the issues and you could really smack a 1000 hard (150 - 200 extra HP). and probably not destroy it... an upgraded unit like suncoast or defero you could smack really hard with a total of 500 HP and well over 1000 ft lbs of torque..

I think you'll have no issues with yours.. my red bus has to have a decent amount of weight to it. and i havent blown up my trans yet.. im at what close to 15000 miles in so far (yeah I drive the bus alot).. mine is a bit built but not radical..

the biggest thing about allison is they shift a bit different than what most people are used to.. these are clutch to clutch transmission so only some of your shifts will feel "normal" because the release / apply of a clutch needs to happen perfectly timed.. the TCM's attempt to learn the methods to best eliminate flares (and more importantly avoid binds..)

many people (including myself).. coming from the hotrod world are accustomed to shifts that 'Kick' or 'Snap'... you know.. the ones that make the tires screech for 1/4 of a second.. drive an allison andyou say "WTF? this tranny is hosed...".. but its just the normal ways of an allison.. trying to purposely make one shift hard will likely make your wallet shift hard in the near future too.. ive known more than one duramaxx guy who got too Jiggy with the shift pressures on EFIlive and had to get Jiggy at the local allison shop.. thats one area of the programming I leave alone...

Good info Cadillac! I may squeeze another 50 ponies out of this 4-banger at some point, but when I speced this trans I made sure that it was rated for much more weight, HP & torque than I could possibly ever throw at it so (hopefully) it should have a long & happy life.

.....compounds.

I'll say this.. even if you keep fuel turned down, it makes a world of difference in driveability with the 4bt in a heavy vehicle. You've got the fab skills so cost would be minimal. I'm running an HX30/HX35 setup on mine currently and love it.

I'm sure he does... he needs (well.. need may be a strong word.. lol) compound turbos... (One atmosphere charger feeding air to a smaller high pressure charger).

If sized properly, can eliminate turbo lag and increase top end by a good bit.

My HX30 / HX35 setup spools instantly and can produce over 60psi (I currently run 35-40psi on stock head bolts and gasket) without getting out of its efficiency range.

I went from the stock H1C to a single HX30 (huge improvement in boost response)... then compounded it with an HX35 feeding the 30 all with the stock VE pump. On stock fuel pin.. just maxed out pump settings, it put down almost 500 ft lb @ 38psi with water meth.

wow 60 PSI!! my stock turbo on my 444E is 15 PSI at max.. so question if I fake the cokputer into fueling more will the turbo spin up more assuming the wastegate doesnt open?

Yes. More fuel typically equates to driving the charger harder. What year is your engine? The early 7.3 had a laggy turbo system. If you can find someone who will tune the 444e, you can certainly pick up power. I wouldn't push the stock charger much past 20-25psi... Starts to get inefficient.

Also, sustained EGTs need to stay under 1200F. More fuel =more heat.. but more air will decrease the EGTs to a point (as long as the charger is within it's efficiency range). You also don't want it billowing black everytime you roll into the pedal or pull a grade. It's a balancing act.

What HP rating is your engine?

Right now, my setup is limited by fuel. I'm on stock injectors and stock pump parts (just tweaked).. and see 35-40psi flat out with peak EGTs around 1k (which is low).. no smoke unless I lug it down from a take off.

Love some of the compound setups I have seen but I barely had room for the HX30W. I'll just play with the timing and smoke screw for now but would love to see some pix of your setup.

Started playing with the tranny cooler that came in the mail from Earl's. Looks very well made and the bar & plate system should provide quite a bit of cooling. Still going back & forth on the fan. Should probably go ahead and slap one on top of this thing while I'm under there. WTHIJM.

Making hanging brackets for this puppy.

And still a few more days until fully cured...but...

...went ahead and attached the battery box cover/step.

Also started on a fold down set of steps to go on my fold down rear deck but nothing to show yet but a pile of metal. $82.06 worth of metal to be exact.

ONWARD!

Looks to be coming along nicely. Fab work is top notch.

I'll post some pictures of my compound packaging later tonight if I can find some of the pics from putting it all together.

Been digging through your build to find out how much room you've got to work with. It's tight for sure but doable I'd say. Then noticed you have a p-pump... lucky SOB. Lol

Anyways..

Sweeeet! Great looking install. I'll bet it spools like crazy. Did it help or hinder your MPG's? I have heard of some pumped up tunes that actually wound up getting better mileage.

And roger the P-Pump. I had to do a lot of shopping to find an all mech inline. Could have bought an ISB for half what the older motors were going for. Seems they are a high demand item.

Mileage is about the same but driveability is 10x better.

The HX30 is a great charger by itself though.. if you end up not needing the power, the 30 will spool very quickly and is efficient to upwards of 26-28psi.

These engines are definitely pricey now. The swap crowd has made them popular which has driven up cost. The P-Pumps are rare compared to the VE. If you got it for under 3200 or so used, you did great.

You can easily pull another 50-100hp out of that engine and keep it very reliable. Mine came out of the box with 120hp at the crank.. 300ish ft. lbs. I close to doubled those numbers without changing any hard parts in the VE pump which doesn't fuel nearly as well as the P-Pump.

Anyways, keep up the good work.

I am always amazed at what can be done with these little 4-bangers. I have been following numerous builds over on 4BTSWAPS.COM and they are all over the place. Some for reliability, some for mpg, some for insane power. And the funny thing is...except for the really BIG power builds...most (like you) didn't change that many parts or give up MPG's.

Mine came as 130HP and 335 torque which is plenty for my tiny rig, but...hey...a bit more grunt is always nice. And 200-250 can be had with not much more than a screwdriver.

But when I see some of those guys pumping out 800+ with the same basic motor...it boggles my tiny mind (course, there are four turbos, and a lot of money in them by then and they measure lifespan in hours).

The Cummins B series (both 4 & 6) were nothing short of brilliant. Too bad the dark forces of this world won't ever let anything like that be built again.

Absolutely. My tahoe build is on 4btswaps. Great group over there. My user name there is AcIdBuRn02ZTS

I met up with a few members.. bought my big intercooler from KhaosKustoms who has one of the nastiest power builds I've seen. He was having trouble keeping blocks from flexing and such. He 3/4 "hardblocked" one and split the block vertical between cylinders 2 and 3 on the dyno.

Then Southbend Clutch has one making north of 1k in a mud rail.

With deep enough pockets, these engines can easily make huge power.

I've got everything sitting in my garage to install head studs and put some real fuel to it. 60+psi soon to come when life allows... Hasn't been high on the priority list... that and the current rear end just wont hold it.

Sounds mighty sweet. And Roger the head studs if it will be pumping big pressure. I have heard of plenty of heads being blown off engines, but never a block being split in half...that is nuts! And beyond all the horses, it's crazy how much torque such a small motor can generate. I'm guessing it moves that Tahoe very nicely.

Does pretty well. I screwed up a bit and made the assumption that I'd need a low stall converter when I built the trans (4l80e). I ordered a 1200rpm stall billet converter from hughes... Should have gone with a 1400-1600 and it would be much better off the line. Even with the tiny charger, it is a bit smokey on hard take off due to the converter. If it would stall a bit higher, it would perform a lot better.

One of these days, I'll pull the trans back out and have the converter cut open and loosened up a bit.
