You'd be surprised. I think a lot of people are in the know now-a-days.

I thought about some C4 but all the Home Depot here has is some cheap Chinese made Semtex.

Re: '46 Chevy Shorty

Howdy All --- Spent a few days putting together a home made hoist and just got it upright today. Had to bribe four bar flys with a bucket o' beer to help pick it up but we got it up in a minute. No can do solo, it was hard enough positioning and welding everything on my own! Still need to mount the trolley & winch but should be able to start on the motor & trans placement soon. Will be busy teaching a class for almost two weeks, then back on this project.

BTW...these things have gotten expensive even at the cheapo, Chinese tool places. Between $1700 & $2400 bucks for 3-$400 bucks worth of steel! And that is less the trolley & winch. Never could find anything I'd trust used so I bit the bullet and just built the damned thing. Like I said...about 3-$400 bucks for the steel and should easily be good to 2 tons...four times the weight of my engine & trans.

Hey Tango, Have fun teaching! I know your students will leave your class with a whole new bag of tricks;--BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!

I'd have given an Atta boy for the "A frame"thingy but obviously it never happened as there are no pictures

I'll look forward to hearing about it all when you get back. Jack

Re: '46 Chevy Shorty

Hey Jack --- just for you...

It is only partially complete in this pic. 6" I-Beams at top & bottom with 4-1500# casters now. Still need to add stabilizing braces from sides to top and load the trolley but may have to wait till "after class" to get that done.

It is about 9'-6" tall x 8' across (ID).

Unobtanium is what Braz used for the shell on his ship, Virgil, in the movie The Core. It was a cool science fiction movie where a group of "terranauts" travel to the center of the planet to get to the liquid core to restart it flowing again.

It is a movie that I can watch over and over.

Re: '46 Chevy Shorty

I figger the engine & tranny will go in & out at least a hundred times before I get all the mounts right, so I wanted something solid to hang it all from. Mind you, the chain hoist & trolley are both Chinese but at least the support system is home grown. Hey...if I can't "Buy American" the least I can do is "Build American".

Re: '46 Chevy Shorty

Speaking of Chinese Trolleys --- A friend just passed on some info he came across in a machinists' pub warning folks about the trolleys from Harbor Freight & Northern Tool. Seems that have a tendency to suddenly shed the axles that the wheels ride on (surprise, surprise). They recommended wrapping a loose fitting length of chain over the I-beam and bolting the ends through the trolley or load "just in case".

Had to pass that on as some folks here may be in the same boat. A "Junk"???

Re: '46 Chevy Shorty

Ah, my favorite place--Halbol fleight-- the sent of China. Thanks for the warning. Also watch out for the cast steel strut spring compressors. I had the "ears" break off two sets on their first use--didn't happen with the "Mac" tool on the same strut.

Re: '46 Chevy Shorty

The Chinese won't have to invade us to take over this country, they'll just have to be patient and their cheap stuff will eventually kill us all.

Unobtanium was also being mined in the movie Avatar. I got some from a guy down in Detroit. He also sold me a reverse cramulator for the bus. It's guaranteed to increase gas mileage by 75%. The guy said it worked really well on his ride.

Now that is my kind of science--none of those pesky numbers and formulas to deal with. Just good old fashion testimonials thank you very much.
