I do understand the limits and appreciate the connection. Trying to close the deal as we speak.

Update:
$200 with shipping and hopefully it will be here in a few days and as described. I am always a bit nervous buying parts unseen, but hey, here we go.

And...just to try and clarify for Jack (or anyone else I have confused)...

What I am doing is stacking two of the steering shafts together with an inch or so trimmed off of one to get the length I need. That's why I need the male serrated input shaft. It will weld to the top end of the one coming up from the gearbox and the upper shaft will use it's existing female clamp to connect to the lower one. Throw in a steering shaft support bearing between the two and it might even work. Will still need to do some machining but I think I can pull it all together.

Make any sense?

If I can ever get all the parts in one place, I promise...pics.

ONWARD!

Hey Tango. That makes perfect sense and will work just fine I'm sure. I guess I'd ask why not use a similar pair (input shaft/intermediate shaft) from some other easily had and more economically priced donor for your hook up between the stacked shafts? Jack

When in doubt, build it like a race car.
steering joints @ Speedway Motors, The Racing and Rodding Specialists
you can also get a slightly oversized heim joint for a support. (like a .754 for a 3/4 shaft.)

The Isuzu is such an odd duck that nothing else fits anything on it. The serrated connection is 11/16 by 38 splines and the shaft itself is 1-1/16 which makes it just about impossible to adapt to. I did order the gearbox and will mount the input shaft at the top of the first section of column. At the same time, that part will have a 1" OD section machined so that I can use the largest "standard" support bearing. Which, BTW came from Speedway. From there all I should need to fab is the bracket to hold the support bearing.

Ain't we got fun!

With Christmas break coming up starting Friday I'll have a chance to get some stuff done. Got the rear blank from Blumenthal's last month. Have three thin coats of paint on it so far just to prevent rusting.

I'm going to be getting some serious help at the end of January/beginning of February. I'm going to swap my '88 Ford B600 for some work and buy my daily driver when it comes up for auction sometime late spring/early summer.

Got my teaching license back, so I'll have some serious income starting in the fall. Wife and I are going to be teaching Jr. High math/science. We're not sure which one just yet. So with two incomes we'll be getting both Saf-T-Liners going in short order.

SOOOOO looking forward to working ONE job, not six like I am now.....

Sounds good. Congrats on the job situation, I know it was severely limiting your bus time.

Just want to wish all my fellow Skoolies a Joyous Noel and the Happiest of Holidays! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa...whatever reason you choose to celebrate...may it be the best!

And...

I finally got a few parts from my sheetmetal shop for Christmas!

Won't be able to do anything with them until after I get back from visiting my Grand-kids, but...at least now I will be able to move ahead a bit in a few critical areas come the New Year.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
...and...

ONWARD!

Hope the New Year is shaping up well for all - I managed to get a couple of small chores started over the "Holidays".

First...a house battery box. Big enough for three Lifeline 150 amp batteries. Roughly 17" x 24" with room for about an inch or so of insulation all around. It is at the back on the drivers side right behind the wheel well since my Honda genny will be on the "back porch" right behind it.

Big tin box...

Hole for Big tin box...still trying to decide whether to weld it or screw it in.

Battery box set into the hole. Still needs paint & insulation as well as mounting.

And then there is that spare tire thing...

Here are the frame mounts and hinge. A section of 3/4" black pipe. There will be a couple of sections of 11 gauge 1" x 1-1/2" rectangular tube attached to the hinge so that it can be dropped down if needed. Has been a real pain to deal with since the 140# tire has to be in position to measure anything. Will get the rest of the steel next week.

Have a few of the dash/firewall pieces but need to do a lot of work before I can begin installing anything. With any luck, my custom made steering components will be ready for pick up this coming week.

ONWARD!

Hey Tango. Nice battery box. Like Opus says, screw it in. If you weld it you'll just about guarantee yourself that something will fly up and damage the box requiring its removal-----Jack

I'll throw in a vote for screwing it too!

I come to this thread for bus fabrication porn, and am never disappointed. Keep up the work and pics!!
