Just for the record...still no bus work happening but I have made a lot of progress on this big a$$ bench. Still a lot more to do but, in spite of 100+ degree heat index daily, I am making progress.
Here is the latest pic. A lot more has been done but we worked too late in the day for pix.

For anyone so interested --- below is the latest on the BAB (Big Ass Bench). I have now hand applied about 4400 pounds of concrete. Still have another thousand or so to go but it will be nearly a month before I can get back to work on it. Gotta go earn some bus money for a couple of weeks.

More off topic stuff...
Got the "scratch coat" applied to the seat area. From here it will be about three weeks before I can get back on it. Gotta' go make a little bus money (I teach classes every summer in this wacky art).
Still another 1500 or so pounds of cement media to lay on this beastie.

That's no margined trowel? Could be a steel rake on the big runs and a small garden rake for the knot holes?

I know what it takes to do concrete construction but CONCRETE ART.
No wonder your back hurts!
You need some of your students helping? But I understand the help will cut into the bus money.

Howdy All --- Just got back into town from teaching a round of classes in San Antonio...one of my favorite cities in Texas. Hope to get back to work on the bench on Monday. The classes were a paying gig...the bench is actually a freebie. However...I have been promised free drinks for life.
Somewhere in the coming week I am going to get started on a couple of bus projects. I am working with a sheet metal guru to sort out my dash/firewall and a couple of other things. If I can get him going, maybe by the time I wrap up the cement work, he'll have the steel ready to go in. Well...at least it's a plan. Gotta do something to keep that puppy moving ahead.
ONWARD!

Thanks all --- we had a great benefit at that bar yesterday for a buddy whose cancer has come back. Between a lot of great music, food, raffles and such, we raised $15 grand. Amazing what even a small village can do when they pull together.
Just waiting on weather now to get back on the bench.

Thanks to all the rain here keeping me from working on the bench...I managed to get a start on some sheetmetal work on the bus. A really tricky part. I have to build a completely new firewall and dash. The area where the pedals (and my feet) go is much more complicated than I would prefer but has to be done. Took my measures (several times), made up a rough template and handed it off to my local sheetmetal shop. It is way too demanding for my limited skills and equipment. If all goes right, I will be able to hang my pedals and secure the steering shaft within the next couple of weeks. A major milestone.
Once I get that area worked out, I can begin on the rest of the firewall and doghouse. I had one plan a while back, but have changed it up a bit.
Also...It looks like I will be relocating the bus (and a gazillion loose parts) to a new work space before long. Will be a Royal P-I-T-A but, should be a much better situation. Wish me luck.

is that 4BT just longer and taller than the original engine requiring a whole new firewall / doghouse setup?
be sure to make a nice insulated doghouse cover and dynamat the heck out of the area around the footwell...
even on my stock bus im still fighting engine heat around my feet.. everything just gets hot... I always thought diesels didnt make as much heat as a gasser.. but im tellin ya my footwell in this bus is MUCH hotter than ever was with that 454 gasser bluebird...

Roger the heat Cadillac --- The puppies seem to run cooler by pumping the heat out into the cab. Gonna be a bear to insulate for heat & sound but at least there are some pretty good (but pricey) products available these days.
As for the engine location, I had to move it back nearly 24" due to the Cummins width. Between the fact that the old in-line Chevys were real skinny and the way the pre-war frames narrow down in front, there was no choice except to locate it back quite a ways. Much more and it would qualify as a "mid-engine" rig.

Hey guys ... had you considered wrapping the exhaust manifolds and down pipes? I know that hot-rodders don't like to wrap tube headers AND that community is split 50/50 on cast iron. I will be putting a turbo blanket on mine and wrapping the down pipe.
Also ... about your foot pedals. Had you looked at Summit Racing for a solution? https://www.summitracing.com/?cm_mmc...FYskhgodN_wLgw
They have tons of pedal boxes. I have found that they are cheaper than the Auto Parts Stores for a LOT of stuff. Worth a look.
