grrrr where did they go... pictures

the fist six pictures are unloading. My first time behind the wheel. The second to the last picture is the granddaughters inspecting for the first time... the reason for this project in the first place. and the last picture is my friends, the truck driver Okie, his wife Beth, myself and Aaron, the shop owner where a lot of the furious work will be done in the next 30 days.

Wowser! What a long, strange trip! So glad it worked out and is "home" now bud. The Wayne body looks pretty much identical to my '46. Guess they didn't feel the need to modernize anything just because the War ended.

And you could not have had better back up than Okie. Super guy. He seems to have a soft spot for helping salvage old iron.

CFan't wait to see where you go with this. Just keep the pix coming.

next up

So today I spent the early part at the junk yards. I now own a telescope, tilt, steering column from a kenworth. I need a lower shaft part, that will have to come from a dealer.... maybe.

I have also decided I will have to put together a library of service manuals, the engine, transmission, cruise control, and power steering pump will be 1995 dodge.

The brakes, chassis, will be 2005 Ford f-450.

fuel tanks, instruments, air condtioning, the battery part of the charging system, and some of the seats, will be aftermarket.

I just realized I need a book shelf for repair and maintenance manuals, along with a file cabinet for warranties...

I will take some pictures of the project at the first of next week when the bus is supposed to go indoors.

Sounds like a good start. Don't forget to keep a log of all parts (and their make, model and numbers) for future reference. Mine is now up to about 5 pages. I'd be lost without it.

Check out this link for service manual for 1995 Dodge. I just downloaded the 97 manual on my phone. (Broken timing gear case from kdp) the link is on cummins forum:

http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/94-98-powertrain/2467841-oil-leak-fix-front-gear-cover-help-new-post.html#/topics/1024698

NOTE: Before you install your engine make sure you have an updated gear case or a tab has been installed on the kdp (killer dowel pin).

Better yet...peen it. The tab & screw are just more items to get into the gears.

Good point Tango! My case was trashed so I bought an updated case. It has a shoulder machined so the dowel pin can't fall out.

This is what I'm dealing with right now.... fun stuff. Turns out my KDP had already fell out when I bought the trucks few years ago. Previous owner told me crank seal was leaking. (That was only part of it) oil leak has been getting worse.

Tango's advice on keeping a log is advice to be heeded. My "log" consists of a 2" deep by 8 1/2" by 11" broiler pan (old skool porcelain) into which I have dumped all my sketches, measurements, calculations, contact info etc. Not very organized but at least it is all in one spot. Now that I have been using my conversion for a while I find I can't remember all the little nuances of the build so I started a seemingly never ending Operators Manual. It is up to 15 pages now and I find myself referring to it frequently. I 'spose when I no longer can use my bus the manual will give the next owner a fighting chance at figuring out just what he has. update the latest

I really dont like being at the mercy of somebody else when it comes to getting this bus thing done, GRRRRRR.

So I have three trucks all in a row. 1995 dodge one ton dually 5 speed - the engine donor 2005 ford f450 the chassis donor, and the bus.

So I spent the about 8 hours pulling the front bodywork/bumper off the dodge. I am doing this to make engine removal faster. radiator, intercooler, ac condenser, bumper, battery boxes, batteries, engine coolant. I label the wiring harness as I go, I am probably going to use a lot of the stock truck harness for the swap. I have figured out the ford frames are about six to eight inches wider than the dodge frame. That means I have plenty of room for the low mount air conditioner compressor. I am going to try find one that is longer (bigger) and see if I can get away with one compressor for the whole bus (648 cu feet) brass radiator with plastic end tanks.... did not know that existed.

I am picking up the third two place seat tomorrow. That will mean I have three two seat, seats. all new, all cloth, all with integrated seat belts. That is room for six. I will be putting in four single seats, one for the driver, three for passengers.

I have not posted any pics of the floor plan, i will in the future. I have made, a one quarter scale layout on paper. Using that I came to the conclusion I could not make use of a three seat. So I have two brand new triple seats, with seat belts built in, cloth, with mounting rails for sale. $150 - weighs about 200 lbs. I cannot pick up one by myself.

that's all for now.

How wide are your triple seats that you have for sale? Do they recline or lay down flat?

triples....

They do recline, but more like air plane seats recline, 57" ? If you used these, you could unclip them from the floor and move them at a different latch point. Why not come over tonight and I will show them to you. I also have my double here too. if you want to see what they are like in person. bout a 30 minute here to topeka?

William,
Thank you for the offer. I would like to take you up on that when time permits for me. August will be busy for me with upcoming vacations, tractor show and anniversary plans. But in the future I would love to come over and check the seats out and your Bus of course! With a little hope, mine will be fixed soon and I'll drive it over!

Great project , love seeing the older ones brought back to life.

Are you going to use the 5 speed from the Dodge? Maybe you already know this, but if not here goes....

It is likely the NV-4500. I have had a lot of trouble with mine, 5 gear comes loose after the nut holding it backs off, and leaves me without 5th. Even double nutting it, and a longer splined main shaft have not kept it on for more then 50,000 miles. Also the stock clutch has a weak center section. I put in a southbend 13" clutch rated for up to 26,000 GVW, and have not been stranded since.

By the way the NV-4500 is only rated for 15,000 GVW

Good point. I'm not sure if I brought it up earlier, but they make an updated main shaft for the NV4500 that puts the load on a ring instead of the nut. I updated the nv4500 in my dodge a year or more ago with the new main shaft when I rebuilt the trans.

Mine was off when bought the truck, so just tightened the nut and went with it for a little bit, that came loose, so welded the nut to the gear. well the thread stripped and off it came again. Trans was on it last legs so bought a rebuilt one with the updated main shaft. That lasted 50,000. Double nutted it then, now off again. I give up. Will take 5th gear out next time I have room in the shop. plan to take the camper off put a flatbed on and just use it for local stuff.

I have heard that the 4 wheel drive ones a spacer (ring)will keep it for sure, but the two wheel drives have nothing behind it but the nut. nothing to push against.

Mine is a 4wd so maybe that's why I haven't had any problems yet. I haven't put too many miles on it yet either. I went your same route years ago on my 94 2wd 1 ton. I tacked nut in 4 places and it lasted awhile. Then I bought a nut that had two set screws with brass pieces that hold against the threads. That came off 2 or 3 times... I was tired of pulling the driveshaft and tailhousing on that truck!

update more stuff

The transmission is the NV5600, the six speed, i have only read the five speed issues with the tailshaft nut.

I am putting this bus on a 2005 ford F450 chassis. The front wheels are 9" wider than the 1954 B5 front fenders. So, I have been looking for 1953 -1956 ford F7 or F8 front fenders.... they are wider, much wider.

I have found a fender in new hampshire and one in santa maria...... so about $400 for each fender plus shipping..... but one of the fender sellers will not ship...so.

I found a 1955 for fire truck, 33,000 miles in virginia. so, I am going to fly out to virginia, rent a u haul, dis assemble the front of the fire truck, take fenders, hood, radiator, supports, a siren or two, other cool fire, truck kind of stuff. and truck this stuff home.

saga continues ,, and another part of the puzzle comes together.
