Antifreeze ??????????????

Bought a 1996 gmc, 350 gas, P30 3500hd thomas bus, 97,000miles. Has 6 windows on one side, so its a little bigger than most short buses. Anyway, was checking out radiator. All I have is the gmc book for truck and no thomas manual. The bus has extra air up on ceiling in back. Also has extended hood with different, elonggated radiator system. It appears to have green antifreeze in it. Book says it should have orange for truck. Wondering if its changed to green because of back air? I suppose it may be the new generic stuff that mixes with anything as it does look sort of weak green but floats 5 balls. What have you found and use. Should I drain the whole deal and put in orange? Its run this long with whats in it. Any advise. Thanks in advance.

Re: Antifreeze ??????????????

It was probably changed because Dexcool is evil, evil stuff. When it is exposed to air or left in an engine too long it turns into a fairly strong gasket eating acid and gums up terribly. At some point I'd be willing to bet someone put intake gaskets in that thing and had to change the water pump and decided to put the green stuff back in. Green stuff needs to be changed about once every two years, but that forces you to get on a much easier to follow maintenance schedule and it won't destroy other parts. No one seems to have a problem routinely getting their oil changed every 3000 miles for about $30 a time which adds up to almost $1000 in 100,000 miles, but try and get them to do a $100 coolant flush just once in that same time frame as recommended by GM and you're fighting an uphill battle.
