I had a request from 64north for more details about the folding bench.

Here are more pictures of it.

As can be seen here, the back folds down.

The bench can open about 75° high without the cushions, but when the 4" thick cushions are in place they get squished at the back and it becomes difficult. I set the lid supports to keep it open at around 50°.

Here's the back angle.. Can't remember what I settled on, but it's comfortable.

The piano hinge is too thin of a gauge material to hold up to bodies moving around on top of it when it's opened as a bed, so I added these supports. Now the weight rest entirely on the wood instead of the hinge.

With the cushion in place you can barely see the additional supports.

North64 also asked about the backrest "leg". It is proving to be plenty strong. With the weight of the plywood resting on it alone it doesn't want to slip out. Once the weight of a human is on it you can't even kick it out.

This may seem like a strange design to some people, but it was the only way I could dream up that would allow a 50" wide bed when open, but only a 20" wide seat when closed.
I'll be adding gas struts to it eventually to make it pop up on it's own once it goes beyond 2" open.

Pictures of the bus as it sits on this sunny summer day!

^ The table is perfectly level. I'm just taking a picture from down the river bank.

Wood for the winter:

We're in the process of building an outdoor sawdust-toilet for guests. We like to have parties and let people camp out and want a more private place for people to do their business rather than the bus.
Since it's a sawdust toilet we were able to put it near the river so you can sit and watch the water flow by. We'll be putting in a horse-stable style door so you can have lower privacy, but with the upper door open!

We're going to hang a bench swing on that "arch way" sort of thing. Don't worry, I tested it's strength... by accidentally dropping an old ash tree on it. It passed with flying colours! It was only partially accidental, actually. The tree had a slight lean in that direction so I knew it was a real possibility, but I was trying to get it to go the other direction. I made sure to cut the trunk so it had NO CHANCE of falling on the bus.

We went viral! Well, maybe not quite, but at least two people have recognized me because of this article. A surprise for sure.

Why is it that I always miss these little references to liking something. In this case "like your disco ball". I had to go back to look for it and still can't find it. How's referencing what picture or number you saw it in (your driving me crazy)

I'm still looking for the pine cone that resembles Morgan Freeman

Not much has been done to the bus for the past couple months, but we sure have been using it a lot!

In July we did a trip down around Harbor Springs, Michigan for Blissfest (which was awesome!), then toured down to Lansing to visit some family and pick up a load of roofing metal and a trailer that's been down there waiting for us. It was much heavier than I had expected, but the bus pulled it just dandy!
1000km (621 miles) without any problems; half of that with several thousand pounds of steel following behind. The whole trip only cost about $50 in diesel to top it off. I had a bunch of fuel from my Grandmother's old oil burning furnace which cut down the fuel bill significantly. WVO is still in the works, but I've got bigger fish to fry right now...

Like building a bridge!

We scored some free "shelving" from a farm we're working with. It was given to them by a marine that used to store boats for the winter. I've seen operations use it around here. They use big fork lifts to put boats on these shelves; typically up to 3 tall. Here are some of the pieces tagging along behind Armageddon. We did it in two loads because we didn't want it to be so high that our poor ratchet straps wouldn't be able to hold it in place.

And here is the future location of our bridge:

We're making 2 girders by bolting 6 of them together and welding the butts. Here's a picture of one of the assembled girders. They will be hung upright for maximum strength.

Got one across using creative winching and the help of the neighbour and a friend! Thanks Tyler and Devin (Tyler not seen in photo)!

We'll be back at it next week. This week is for computer work (boring).

Sweet man, your living the dream in the woods.

Any fish in that stream?

No, just minnows. The stream is too volatile. Normally it's a nice 1 foot deep flow. Right now it's down to a couple inches, thanks to the beaver dam upstream, which I haven't got around to pulling yet. At least 3 times a year it goes up to 6 feet deep. Actually, if I wait long enough the water will eventually wash that dam away.

There are many lakes within a 15-20 minute dirt bike ride that provide fantastic fishing, though. Lots of lake trout and pickerel. Good eatin'!

Speaking of wildlife, we've had two visitors lately. One is a fat and pesky black bear that has been attempting to get into everything and anything. He's been showing up in the very early mornings; 3am today. I've got to give this fella credit where it's due: he's smart. The other day we came home and everything that LOOKED like a cooler was turned upside down. We didn't have any food out, but he knocked over a rubber maid container with shoes and boots; one with clean pots and pans..

This morning at 7am I woke up to the dogs barking out the bus door. To my surprise there was a young bull moose (1 foot long antlers or so) standing in the driveway staring us down! I have been seeing his scat all through the property, but this was our first face-to-face. I woke Erin up to take a look, since she has never seen a moose, but by then he was wandering down the road. We ran out to the road and watched him trot out of site.
I didn't even think to grab my camera... wish I would have.

Actually, we're building more of a glorified deck. The decking will all go on top of the girders, instead of having the girders on the side like a bailey bridge. This way we can have the girders directly under the tires as we go across. Also, we don't have enough free steel to build the lower cross members for a bailey bridge That would require some hefty I-beams and they ain't cheap!

I'm so going to come visit you one day.

Sound like your living my dream with the fishing, bears, and living in the woods.
