Ceiling Rust
I have been de-rusting what I thought was mostly surface rust due to some leaks in the ceiling/roof hatch and I found this. Any advice on dealing with it? Can I just patch it somehow?

Can I cut out these beams or is that a bad idea?
I am not sure what to do with this corroded metal beam. I am pretty sure there is another beam opposite from this one that also has rust corrosion on the inside as rust dust falls through the screw holes when I bang it with a hammer. Any advice on how to deal with this?

Have you figured out the cause of the leak? You could always cut out the rusted section and weld in a new piece, but you'll probably want to remove the hatch (again?) to do that.

Its RIGHt next to the roof hatch. I'd bet money on that being the leak. I've never had a roof hatch on a bus that didn't leak.

Yeah so I have taken the roof hatch out and going to replace soon (it was definitely cause of the leakages). Right now I just have a tarp over to keep rain out. I am more just wondering if I need to replace those beams or I can just leave them since I’ll be putting a new hatch and resealing really well.

If all the nasty rust is cleaned up, you could spray in a rust converter to stop what's left. I'm thinking those beams are simply so there is something for the hatch top and bottom pieces to screw into. In that case, those holes probably aren't going to effect anything.

Ahh that makes sense. Hmm I think I'll probably go this route then. Any products in mind that work well? I've used rustoleum rust reformer spray on other parts.

The jug of rust reformer is the REAL stuff. The spray is just black spray paint unfortunately.
I'd put some ospho in a spray bottle of some sort and go to town on it.

Haha oh man thanks for the info! That's good to know since I used two cans of the stuff spraying surfaces with minor rust 😂. Oh boy what a learning curve this project has had.

I wouldn't sweat the minor rust and the spray.
But yeah, Rustoleum sells Rust Reformer in gallon jugs for like $75. Its milky white.

Might consider a bit of KoolSeal around the roof hole before reinstalling the hatch as well.
