I'm gonna have Ronnie drive this bus and have a look at whatever is causing the driveline vibes at highway speeds. Its barely there till 55 or 60.
Hopefully is not something major but ready for whatever. I love driving this bus and I really want to start using it a LOT!

Its possible but I think its the carrier/support bushing, the ujoints, or a combo of all that but Ronnie is a master of machines and has suggested with the pinion angle its got and the symptoms that its possible the pinion bearing is shot. If the rear ever comes apart I'm popping for a 3.90 ratio so I can run 11R's.
I want to replace anything suspect and also do new shocks and bushings on the rear.

had similar problems at those speeds in a long wheel base HD crew cab - turned out to be the steady bearing - quick fix on the side of the highway to replace it and we were on our way again

Usually if the pinion bearing is wore out the pinion seal is leaking way before that.
The center support bearing/carrier bearing/mid shift bearing etc...
Rubber usually starts dry rotting and let's the bearing float around more than it should.
I would start there and if the money is there then I would replace all u-joints,pinion seal and tranny tail shaft seal while it's all apart.

This. Had an RX-7 that did this from about 57 to 70 then it would smooth out again. I figured it was a wheel bearing or something like that and ignored it. Then driving back to work from lunch one day, it decided to spit the driveshaft completely out. I saw the little bit of gear oil under the car (too low for a good look) and figured I blew the engine. Wasn't until I had it up on a lift that Hey, there''s something missing here!! The bolts at the dif were loose. 2 were missing and 2 were sheared.

Any idea what that'll cost without the new gears? Shocks can't be all that cheap on a bus.

remember to always balance driveshafts as a set. and when you put them back together keep the orientation as its balanced.. I always paint a line along my shafts so the phasing and balance is kept .. ie the splines go back together exactly as they were picked up at the shop.



phase your U-joints.. depending on your bus you may have U-joints on multiple shafts... getting them the most in-phase will give you the smoothest run...

U-joints should be in phase within the same shafty if it is manufactured correctly, however it you dont phase shaft to shaft you can get vibes..



a good driveshaft shop when balancing a set of shafts should also put the shafts together so that U-joints are phased shaft to shaft..

Mine has only one shaft. It looks newer and says "spicer lifetime" on the sticker.

IDk what's original on the bus but I know the gears have been changed from 4.10 to 3.42.

wow.. freightliner does things different.. even my red bus has a 2 piece.. one piece from trans to carrier and then another piece carrier to rear diff...

That's how mine is. I wasn't counting the little shaft from the trans to the carrier.

Ronnie came over and drove the bus... Then he got under there and showed me how the u-joint has ONE spot on it with a little play. That's causing the vibes.

That man Ronnie is AMAZING. He's got me wanting a steam boat haha!
