idle time

I am looking to convert a 16-28 paz mini bus. 7.3l diesel e-350 or 450. I need to run a rooftop a/c and a 120v 20 amp motor plus a few other small things so I need serious power. I currently have a pull behind trailer and I run those things on a large portable genny but for the bus I was thinking of a wagon inverter with about an 10 battery, battery bank and high output (250amp) alternator. Down to the question. I would need to idle to keep up the power all day. how long could I idle on the typical 40gal tank of diesel? Is it more efficient to run a portable genny? do you think the diesel would be quieter than the contractor genny?

Re: idle time

if you are going to buy all that, just buy a honda inverter generator, quiet, runs all day on a tank of gas, like a 3000eui

Re: idle time

Just saw a Honda 3000eui in action. I say "saw" because from 5 feet away I couldn't tell it was running. Gotta' be the quietest genny I've ever seen. Sold me, especially since it is the inverter type that you can run anything off of directly.

Re: idle time

I wish that was an option but my a/c and 20amp blower motor (plus other little things) need at least 5000w continuous. I already have the genny, so the cost for that option is less. but if I can idle for 8hrs on no more gas than the genny, I may be willing to install the batteries and HO alternator.

its a dryer used for car washing or dog grooming. think canister vacuum but it blows a ton of air.

Re: idle time

I guess the base question is how long will a 7.3l turbo diesel idle on a gallon of fuel?
