Newbie Here Questions on Cutaways

I stepped inside two 4 window short buses that were built for small churches. Both buses were single rear wheel. I found that my head brushed the roof. I am only 5'4" tall. Is the shorter height due to these buses being single rear wheel, or a cutaway, or the manufacturer. One bus was about 1" taller inside. This type of bus would not leave any room to install a wood ceiling.

So, do I need to look for dual wheeled cutaway buses to find that heigth inside? I want a 5-6 window bus.

Thanks for any info

Karen

What kind of buses were they? I don't know any that have a shorter than 6'3" ceiling height. No one would build a bus with a 5'4" ceiling height.

I suspect that at SRW bus could be built shorter in order to save a bit of weight.

There was a daycare near where I lived that ran SRW 4 window cut aways that I pulled up next to at a stoplight while driving an E450 (DRW) 5 window Thomas. I didn't get out and measure but my best guess is that they were 10-14" shorter than the Thomas.

Every cut away that I have been inside has had around 6' of headroom. I think that is most common.

Personally, I would shy away from 3/4 or 1 ton chassis for a conversion. I prefer not pushing the load capacity to its limits.

Short Bus

I believe these were day care vehicles. I do need to do more research on the chassis to handle what I want, thanks guys.

The MBTA in Boston has a whole fleet of these Ford-based 4-wheel vans for disabled point-to-point travel. There are double doors on the right rear with a wheelchair lift.

They're fairly short, they look very easy to drive, and they'll fit in a normal parking space.

If I was building a "stealth" van camper for myself, I'd totally look at one, assuming I could find one with reasonable miles that wasn't about to rust in half. (I'd have better luck finding a unicorn that farts rainbows.)

Mine was 6 ft which is why I raised it. Most are between 6 and 6 ft 6. The single rear wheels are often even shorter like vans.
