Ol 82 The IHC/Carpenter Shortie in progress

So Its been a long while since Ive participated in the community other than trying to absorb information from others builds. So thank you for all the information, its greatly appreciated!

I know you all like pictures and lots of them, so here we go... the progress thus far. Enjoy.

Grinding floor with 4" wire brush... took a while. But worked well.






After all brushed/grinderderd cleaned and treated with OSPHO


Post OSPHO, scrubbed & cleaned thoroughly, then painted with Rustoleum. After cured I used automotive seam sealer on all floor joints.





Upper lights & old stop sign holes I made template out of cardboard. Then cut out metal pieces using interior ceiling sheet metal I removed.




Stop sign cover.


Found out I had enough interior ceiling sheet metal left to use as my window covering for the rear six windows of the bus!


Test fit after cutting sheet metal to size... Game on.


My custom installation setup... PNEUMATIC RIVET GUN worth every penny!!!!!! First panel I did by hand... never again.




Aaaand all installed finally. I did the same process with the other side, but with a Pneumatic rivet gun.



For windows, I had custom vinyl home windows ordered up. Was much easier and cheaper than I had thought. Cut fins off, mounted from inside. Sealed up with 3M 5200 marine adhesive.





Five windows in total, also picked up an old metal insulated door at Habitat Restore for 40 bucks. Have to cut to size, do some squaring up of the door opening, make up a custom door jam(angle iron on inside...?? I think) And she will be ready for swingin!








Had to drive it to town. Found a buyer for my old front 20" tires(Was lucky and scored two free 22.5 inch front tires/rims) I don't recommend trying this it was pretty sketchy. Haha...


Lastly and some would argue most important...


All new exterior original style lights installed. (premature... have to remove for paint, but I wanted to drive it)That gets me just about updated, I also tore out the console which housed the radiator core for heating, switches for lights, and little glove type box. Going to rehab that and reuse it... I like the look. Probably put my CD deck there, along with switches & USB.

love the windows.. cusatom windows are the norm now... no reason wy you cant do it for a bus too!. way cool...

only one I wouldve done different is te driver slider since it looks like only te back part opens... but looks great noinetheless!

cadillackid Thanks! Double slide wouldn't be bad. Was trying to keep it simple, and the slide I have gives me just enough to get my arm out the window... and a nice drive through type opening for the coppers (Hopefully not)

sproutroot Definitely easy to work on the engine! Thinking I will get one more window for the door, just not right off the bat. I have good visual with my mirrors... see how it plays out.

Tootalltechie The ol 20" tires for one had very bad crowning & cracking, which caused my steering to feel really loose. Two, they are old, hard to find replacements. Three, I was able to get the 22.5 rims and tires for FREE. Have a friend who was cycling out a truck with his personal business.

jazty Thanks man! I was super happy how they turned out. Looks much cleaner than I had originally anticipated. Grand total was little over 500 for 5 custom size windows. Just went through a window guy that's been used for homes in the past.

...and...aren't the 22.5's a bit taller? Gotta add a couple of MPH's to the highway speed (course, it also throws the speedo off).

even going from a 10R22.5 to an 11R22.5 for me netted a couple MPH. Im assuming there is room up front for the new tires and rims without rubbing on the turns? seems like a large size update unless the total tire height isnt that much different

Plenty of room on the old IHC/Carpenter for the 22.5 up front. Made a world of difference, drives great, and a few extra MPH is much appreciated on this beast!

Tango As for the gauges being off... most of the gauges need replaced and don't work anyways, why not add on a speedometer re-program as well!

Actually...there are some pretty decent GPS speedos these days. And they work on just about anything...as long as the Chinese don't go shooting down our satellites.

do the GPS speedos take into account when you are climbing or descending a grade? maybe im lame but would seem that your speed as noted by the Coppers via radar or laser is your flat-ground speed.. but when on a grade wouldnt your "across the satellite" speed read slower because of the attack angle? or am I just plain over-thinking things again?..

Hmmm...my speed going down hill is always faster than going up hill. If you look close enough to a curve there is a flat spot lol.
Laser and radar are all line of site, so if there is a dip in the road they loose you.

ha! i do know my actual Bus speed is definitely faster going downhill than up-hill. . sometimes pumping a hill i feel like the little engine that could!.. not a chance i care about getting lasered going up hill because it will show Sllooooowwww Moooover..

Hmm GPS unit. Maybe I can find a half decent phone app speedometer. Like Caddilackid... the only time ill need to actually care about my speed is when i'm trying not to drive faster than a 20mph school zone!

Also, down hill is definitely faster... though she still screams like a banshee Haha!

I use a phone / tablet for navigation. Google maps plus "DigiHUD" both android app

I used the free app for both Google maps and DIGIHUD (Heads up Display )
