I am in Nebraska. State farm has mine insured as a non commercial passenger vehicle but it is through their commercial insurance. Make sense? No it don't to me either but that's what it is.
I got my Nebraska license plate. its the same one they give cars. Passenger vehicle license plate. It just has to be any color but school bus yellow and have the stop sign and flashing lights removed. That is done. The title says yellow. Not school bus yellow.

We purchased our rig during the covid conspiracies and so we couldn't get in to OR DMV without long delays just to find out what was needed.
SO, we went with the VT conversion system. Took about 8 weeks at the height of covid BS and we now have transferable registration and plates saying we have a motor home.
Because it's not completed we have it insured as a commercial, for personal use, vehicle....basically a bit empty box truck. When it's complete the insurance will be as a motor home.

Correct. AAA and Good Sam do not cover skoolies.

I called Coachnet to verify and was told that bus conversions were covered so I've been a coachnet member for almost 2 years now.

so i went back to the DMV
i got the same girl again.
not the original guy i was hoping for?
she made me nervous and broke my train of thought.
she did offer to hook me up with RV plates.
but i chickened out cuz i am not sure if that would be best for me?
i thanked her and told her i should do more homework?
the original guy figured out since i was under 10K pounds i can register it as a passenger vehicle.
he was real cool & mellow.
took him about 10-15 minutes, printed out some paperwork " change of class " & said to come back with the bus for inspection with certified weight certificate.
i think i am just gonna take a break for awhile?
maybe try again another day or maybe a different DMV?
attached is some paperwork i found.

enjoy the build!

FYI, for the AAA thing - I found out the hard way that the coverage vary state by state, even with the same "levels".

Example - for years my parents bought the RV Plus level for themselves, and all of us kids, in Michigan. Despite my living in AZ, I was still covered under the Michigan "plan" because that's where Mom and Dad were. I had trailers covered a couple times in Michigan, so assumed that would be the same case when I had an issue with the F350 in Arizona.

Nope...they covered the truck no problem, but they wouldn't cover the tow for the flat bed car hauler that I also had attached to the truck as well, because the coverages are different in AZ, despite it being a Michigan plan AND the RV plan specifically stated trailer coverage.

The kicker - it wasn't an RV trailer. Had absolutely nothing to do with size or weight of the trailer, just that in AZ, ONLY RV trailers are covered, whereas in Michigan ALL trailers are covered. So I could have had the biggest 5th wheel mansion on wheels ever made, and it would have been covered. But a 4x8 utility trailer wouldn't be. So I had to pay for the trailer tow portion of the trip home. The one upside was that since I was covered under the Michigan plan, I was able to submit for reimbursement, and a few weeks later AAA sent me a check to cover the expense.

So it definitely is worth it to verify all these coverages before you need them. Due to my F350 being a dually, tagged commercially, and my trailer is larger/heavier than normal, it put the tow in MDT territory, which was considerably more expensive than normal....there was a bit of a sticker shock involved in that one.

WOW ya i keep hearing all kinds of stories with AAA.
been a member for 25 years and has been great for my cars, trucks & motorcycles!
i called AAA twice here in Oregon and got 2 different responses on my shorty?
one said since its less only 20' long with regular plates AAA would tow it.
the other one said since it was a dually and registered as a cab & chassy ( commercial ) AAA would not.
so im not gonna trust them?
i cancelled my RV package.
since the motorcylcles are not in the RV package like California.
gonna check into coach, net sometime this week?
heard good things about them?
heard good sam wont tow skoolies?
i wonder if coach.net will tow me if i dont have RV plates?
im kinda stuck in the middle of things?
i too may also be towing a little 4' x 8' utility trailer for a motorcycle.
just trying to get all my ducks in a row before doing any long haul traveling.
i may have to get RV plates just to get towed but i camp in a lot of spots that say " no RVs " ?
i am open to suggestions or experiences if anybody can share some knowladge?
already been doing a lot of camping but stay close to home.
thanks for all the feedback.
i appriciate it.

So I am running into the same thing now with State Farm NY.. just bought a 2013 4500 this morning and they wont insure it as an RV without photos of it being an RV and I can't register it without insurance, so have to do commercial insurance first, do the conversion then switch it to RV.. I really hope I dont have to register it as a truck

so i ended up getting a motorhome registration with oregon DMV instead of passenger.
mainly so i can get towed!
AAA wouldnt tow it as a passenger vehicle.
good sam cancelled all there policys with bus conversions.
coachnet said they would definitely cover my bus but it has to be registered as a motorhome.
i was able to self declare at the oregon DMV since it was already registered in my name & state.
so that was cool.
yearly registration cost will go up but insurance will go down so its a wash.
i am still waiting for Statefarm insurance to change my insurance from commercial to RV hopefully?
its been a week and still waiting on underwriting?

so thanks everybody for the help on homework.
i really appreciate all the knowledge & experience.
