Reclining seats.

Hello all,
Has anyone modified or seen stock school bus seat that recline flat? I have a old 4 window that I want to keep the school bus look inside, but would like to make the seats lay down flat to sleep on.

Thanks
Raymond

I think you'll have to go custom for that. They're pretty basic construction, so it should be relatively easy, especially if you can weld

My shuttle bus seats were rigid, and there was no practical way to modify them to make them recline.

How far along are you in the conversion? Many states (and insurance companies) require the seats to be removed to prevent an 'RV' from becoming a commercial people carrier again.

I'm in Oregon and so far they don't care. It had 8 seats and I removed 4 of them. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to make the other 4 recline. I actually want to just replace them but it's my daughter's bus and she wants the bus look.

Hell, it might be easier to replace them with some reclining seat, but then save the Naugahyde or whatever pleather is on them to make seat-covers or re-upholster the new seats.

I think on some transit buses, you'll see seats that fold up so people on wheelchair can occupy the space, but not fold down flat like with RV dinettes.

That said, school bus seats are basically a seat and a backrest tied together by frames, so if you wanted to keep the look, you can just take the seats and backrest and build a dinette with them.

Be mindful of what Rucker said, I think there's a special considerations for high occupancy vehicles, 15 passengers (including the driver) is the magic number I believe.

You'll have to check your state. Some states allow for some seats to remain but if it can carry over 6-8 passengers it's considered commercial. Carrying 6-8 can be considered non-commercial. But check state laws and regulations on that. I've seen it where some people here can reduce seating to that amount and could classify it as non-commercial.
