Your bus has a 6.17 rear end. The fastest it will physically go right now is about 68. But that's with it redlined. My 444E was happiest around 2200-2300.
With around 40 feet of converted bus and 175hp I think 65 is pretty respectable. FWIW- your bus is snappy off the line due to the low gearing.

Well, its only 175 hp and weighs around 20,000 lbs. But with the low rear gearing and the allison 2000 its got a lot of pull from a dead stop.
I've not had it over 10 mph, yet.
If you go to 11r tires it will give you a couple mph, but with your engine and setup your bus is really not gonna like trying to go 70+. Bigger tires will mean you'll need to adjust the speedometer, which isn't a huge deal.
But 65 is pretty good, all things considered. my 92 with the 466 topped out at 62.

I know for a fact that a 444E run at near its redline all the time iss hard on it. I ran mine for 7 months like that, i had a hard time keeping it cool in hot weather, my oil temperature was 10-12 degrees above coolant temp, oil pressure was lower..

if you are gonna drive it near its redline in hot weather, then please be sure your fan clutch is good and that you watch your temperature. you have a nice lockup transmission so at least you arent putting transmission heat into your radiator.

your engine sounds good when it runs..

PLEASE fix that idler pulley.. the bearing is SHOT.. that same idler put me on the side of the road one afternoon in BFE kentucky a few months ago.. unfortunately is a bit of a pricey part, when EC and I checked yours, the bearing looked pretty loose..

one last thing about plowin-down-white-lines..

I decided to try it.. i ran my bus at 70-72 for 200 hundred miles .. the bus didnt mind in the least.. in fact in the hills it probably did better because my turbo was spooled a little higher when it dropped into 5th from 6th. but the drive was totally Not near as relaxing..

at 65 you still pass some traffic.. but you flow right in on the freeway for the most part.. hang out in the right lane, pass an occasional slow truck or old lady in a buick..

at 70 MPH it was a constant shuffle in the traffic, lots of lane changes. and running up on people.. its really amazing that even in 70 MPH zones how many people drive at or just below 70.. so now the drive got completely active and in motion..

I was much more relaxed and enjoying the drive when I went back to 65..

At 65, your engine will be at around 2500 rpm. For engine longevity you may want to consider 60 to be your max cruising speed. That would be at 2300rpm +/-.

Depending on how long you plan to keep it, and how many interstate miles you plan on doing you may want to consider a gear swap in the rear. A 5.29 like I've got would put you at about 70 mph at 2300 rpm.

must be standard design? my bus pre allison 1000 was maxxing right shy of 70..

seems like your DT466 shorty. with the 245 tires on it. would do similar?

and sandi's bus is right shy of 70..

maybe is what navistar used as their "top speed" design for a school bus chassis?

we know they make em factory with less speed.. interested to know if in that same era they made them much faster or not.

in the cooler weather my 444E did fine. at 2500 RPM, but when it got over 80 or so then my temp would start to creep.. or it got annoying todrive because the fan just screamed all the time..

Iíll pay more attention to the RPMs. It seems to hover at 1800-2000 with the pedal to the metal at 65.
The fan kicks on at 120(?) and is consistent.

Something isn't adding up.
Your tires are about 39". Your OD gear is .74, and your rear axle ratio is 6.17.
Put those numbers into any gear/speed calculator and you're near the engine's limits at 65.

we need to re-look at things then because the data in the computer is sure not condusive to 1800-2000 at 65..

we didnt drive it, or i couldve seen the RPM via the computer.. I dont trust these navistar dash panels for one second. 120 is REALLY cold for the fan to kick on.. 220 is more likely but a bit higher than I like to see with a 444E, AGAIN, we need to drive it sometime when I have my computer connected to get the real story..

if it was re-geared then the speedometer would be off as the computer is programmed for 6.17 rear and the number of tire revs per mile. says that the speedo would be reading very incorrectly if you are tached at 1800-2000.

where are you taking it once you get back from your trip?
