Anyone know what temporary tag/permit I'll need?
I went to the TX website but they have several different options and the wording is a little ambiguous to me.

You need the 30-Day Permit.
The Transit Permit is only for cars and light trucks, the 30-day covers buses for private use.
The One-Trip Permit might work too ... ask at the office because the only one you can print online doesn't apply.

I got through the menus and found the one trip 15 day permit, and its available online. Now I'm trying to figure out if I have enough insurance coverage.
How do I know? All my paperwork has is the Combines liability limit (300,000) and my basic PIP coverage (10,000).
This is all really confusing!
Texas says I need 30/60/25, but I'm not sure what means what on my policy. I hate paperwork!!

300 CSL is enough.
It's way over Texas minimums.
I have 500/500/500 ... it only cost a few bucks per month.

I did the 30 day just because I didnt want to worry about the DMV bugging me if I didnt get it registered right away... i would do the same so if the city gives you crap about getting it titled to a MH you have some time

DOT doesnt seem to care about skoolies.. at least not in ohio..
when hazmatt and I pulled into the ohio rest area the other day there were 2 Dotties sittin right there.. neither of them came down and even gave a gander.. one pulled up to the UPS semi that had been there awhile and flicked on his lights.. the other one headed down the freeway...

They've typically blown past me in my buses, like every other vehicle on the road!
Maybe this bus will end that.

hopefully!, we might have to repgoram its computer.. if id been able to get down t oget it, I was going to take my programmer to be able to do it.. but if course winter is setting in.. you Know i'll be hiting the likes of FLorida! and can swing by to do it if it needs it.
did you run the VIN with navistar to see what gears are in it?

No I was going to just check when I get it.
Its got lowpro's so its likely got a higher gear ratio in the rear. I'm thinking the computer and or tires will be the main factors in the speed. I see no reason this bus couldn't be setup to run 75 mph all day.

from what I know of the busses coming out of Texas.. they all seem to have the mechanics to go 70+ but many of the schools program them to 62 maxx.. 75 MPH seems to be the max any bus is designed to go... and in fact we hear thats why allison wont unlock 6th gear on some..
most all of the commercial tires ive seen have a maxx speed rating of 75 MPH so it would be asking for a lawsuit if a bus was built to go 80 and tires were rated at 75.. (regardless of whether the tires will hold together at 80.. I suspect they will esp at the lighter loads our busses are compared to the maxx load on the tire)..
its also one reason why when i program anyone;s bus i place 75 as the max speed...
I ran redbyrd up to 80 ONCE after the trans swap.. yeah it white knuckled me .. the bus got Very squirly very quickly above 75.. granted it was a breezy day and the bus was empty.. . but that cured me of the need for speed in my skoolie.. I reprogrammed my own computer at 75 maxx with a cruise-set max of 65..
ill bet your bus will be capable of close to 70 if not a couple above..

So yeah, not leaving today was a wise move. I've got a full on cold or something. woke up every couple hours with my head pounding and lots of nasal congestion. No signs of infection, so I'm hoping it starts to clear out soon.
Glad I didn't get to TX to find out I'm sick!

Its been a rough year.
If I'd already had some property to keep it on, I'd not have sold my big bus. But I can't rely on my friends to store it and I don't feel like paying to store it and insure it, so I decided it was best to be realistic and re-home it. We'll do another 30-40 footer some day, but for now a shorty with a 466, OD and AC that I can park in my own yard is as good as its gonna get.
I think Shaun is going to fly out with Nichole and drive the bus back. I'm only feeling worse as time goes by.
