The nail in the tire isn't a huge deal. Its holding air. I'll probably just pull it out and hope for the best. These low profile tires suck, so I'm itching to get some 10R's or 11R's on this bus anyway.

The coolant is leaking enough that there's no jerry rigging it or getting around it. Its gotta be fixed.
I had a nail in one of my 225/70R19.5s and a regular tire shop had the proper high pressure repair kits for it.. it didnt lose air I just saw it in the tire when i was parked.. havent had any issues with the repair so far

I usually just pull them out and if the tires hold air, I leave em be.
But I've never had a bus tire with a nail. Mostly my subaru and mower.

That's several unicorns bagged lately....if this keeps up, they may become extinct.

Congrats on finding such a great deal.

Debbie, that sure seems to have worked for you. You got diligent and put in the time searching. I'm still a little shocked at what you found. What a prize. I think everyone wants a look at that engine in your new shorty. You've certainly got the luck. I just happen to live near a casino if you've got any luck left.

lol only took Deb a week or so to get a bus, and she's beaten us all!

Where's the bus, Debbie? You should start a build thread!

Well the good news is I've found a nice, competent, trusted community diesel guy.
I walked in, he climbed down from a Pete he was working on, and we talked about my bus' engine and the coolant leak.
When I described the leak he knew right away what I was talking about! FINALLY!
That's where the good news ends.

The bus is LIKELY going to need a new front and rear timing cover and the associated gaskets. I could tell he knew what he was talking about when he asked if my engine had "the updated cover". I'm pretty sure it does not, which means I need to find the front and rear cover used (but the updated parts) or buy brand new and the parts alone would be $3000. A couple grand in labor.
So 5 grand to have it fixed right. 3 grand to maybe fix it with used parts.
Even the mechanic said I could do the front cover. But that rear one he said is a real PITA, especially if you don't have the shop, the tools, etc.

I drove over to the bus, looked all over for the "nail in the tire" and couldn't find it. Climbed into my van, popped open the roof vent and took a nap on a couch I'd just picked up from my moms. I awoke to Shauns highly medicated dad pressure washing my van all high and telling me just to over torque the cover bolts and hope for the best. The next suggestion was to run it with the rad cap off. THe next suggestion was to try to sell it to "a woman on Craigslist".
At this point I'm a bit frustrated, my head is spinning. So I headed to Starbucks for a coffee, grabbed a pack of smokes, and headed back to my house.
Buying any used vehicle is a crapshoot. Hell, Subaru taught me even a brand new vehicle is a crap shoot.
I've crapped out a few times, this ones the biggest gamble I ever crapped out on.

I have no way of paying for this even if I did it all myself, so now I'm going to have to do some fund raising. With the wedding coming up I don't think I'll be driving this bus for the next year or so.
Sorry to be so bummed, but damn.

Would it be cheaper and easier to just replace the whole damn engine?

For that kind of repair bill, you could get another bus either as a donor vehicle or replacement.

Yeah, but I don't have that kind of money anyways.
Pretty much stuck right now, and plan to fix it right, whatever that takes.
I'm a dashboard and a coolant leak away from bus perfection.
Well that and my air compressor is starting to go. LOTS of oil coming out of the air tank when I drain it. All three chambers.

I'm honestly pretty bummed and I've not been having much luck since my brother's death. I keep waiting for that day when it will all settle down but the bad news just keeps pouring in.
I don't mind spending twenty grand on my bus, but I don't have that money today so I've gotta just swallow this lump for a while and move on I guess.
One way or another I'm going to have a reliable, rust free bus that can cruise at 70-80 all day and pass traffic uphill.
But getting to that point is apparently going to all be uphill.

I'm honestly thinking about listing the house and buying some land and getting the bus finished.
If I've gotta spend so many thousands of dollars, maybe I should hunt down a 530 and 3060 for this bus.

In the meantime, I'm down to roaches. THAT is a bummer!

If I'm selling the house, I may as well get one of these for the bus-

Man, I really appreciate the help with getting the stuff working on my bus.
You guys are cool, and I'm sorry I'm so bummed out today.
Shaun's dads asinine suggestions and refusal to shut up about the bus when I was clearly about to boil over were just too much. I had to come home and roll another one.

I wish we had the tools and such to just tear into the front of the engine, but I'm not real comfortable having a non-running bus in shauns yard. He'll not leave me alone until its gone if its not running, so leaving it be until I can calm down and figure this out is probably my best bet. The part about fixing it myself that has me worried is that rear cover. I'd hate to tear it down to there only to have to put it all back just to limp it to someone's facility who CAN do that rear timing cover.
I need to find out more about this updated front and inner cover situation more.

I was hoping to take this bus on our honeymoon, but that hope is rapidly fading. The subaru won't do as its eating its own transmission to death at 61k miles.
Looks like an air mattress in the van for us! lol

I've been having a kinda rough time for the last few months and this latest setback has been a bit hard to swallow, but I promise I'll calm down sooner or later.
