I think we are all hoping to see pics of you with the bus out and about. I know I cant wait to see you start the actual build out. What were the dimensions of this one internally compared to your old one? I like stealing ideas

Its a foot or two shorter than the last one. I guess there's 13 feet or so behind the drivers seat. I'll have to measure it once I get it back.
The build will be pretty basic and simple. Next phase of demo is the floor, I think.

You've not met my dad. I can tell you that JB Weld doesn't work on outboard driveshafts. Square peg in a round hole. He decided to fill it with JB and just shove the shafts together. What the hell else are they replacing and charging me for without calling me first?
Not bus related but I made a dealership undo a lot of extra stuff they did just because they didn't communicate with my wife or I ended up getting the hard stuff for free cause it cost them more to take it out and put the old stuff back in.
All I said was why didn't you tell us about it before you did it.
Went in for a factory recall and a 50$ oil change and I owed 300$ to get it back and that was with me at work and the dealer shuttle didn't pick my wife up when called where they dropped her off so she walked 2-miles back to the dealer and they wanted 300 instead of 50-55$.
Then she got it home and didn't notice it had lost some oil because the oil cap was never put back on.guess where I went.
I always check the work of others because my wife and my son have been screwed before.
Unless we do it ourselves.
When you do get it back. You need to know exactly what coolant they put in it and check it cause I can almost guarantee after a good ride down the road that it will be low.

I haven't rushed them.
Just because I'M anxious doesn't mean I've lost patience. I didn't call them today, I'm just waiting to hear from them.

I'm wondering what coolant they'll use.
I'd imagine they use the red stuff, but I have no idea. I've read that the best coolant for these engines is the "yellow stuff from Shell".

You might just need to stop buy there and check on what they are doing.
Most mechanics don't care about someone that has a specific purpose(your bus) walking in to see WTF.
The office will probably say NO and if you insist an escort.
I usually just drive (behind my bus ) up like I know where I am going and walk in there and if it's in the lot then I will pull my truck/car up to it nose to nose and walk straight into the mechanics bay and ask the first one I see what is going on with that one.
As long as you act(safety wise) that you have been and can do there job but ain't set up for it at home? Most mechanics will walk you through and tell you what the hell.
If you get one that's a butthead then walk out of the bay door that you went in and walk to the office door and say I just talked to butthead mechanic and I will not except his work on my vehicle?

They called me back.
Needs new inner and outer timing covers, oil pump, and water pump. I told them I'll do the water pump and just to re-use the old one with a new gasket. I know that water pump is good enough for now, and I can do it in fifteen minutes myself. Its one of the easiest water pumps to replace.
They haven't got anyone there today to finish writing up the estimate, so I won't know anything more till tuesday.
What a crappy design for that front timing cover!

So- anyone wanna bet on what it'll cost?
I'm guessing 5 grand?

yukkers!! that ,eans pulling the head I believe!. at least from what the service manual looks like.. the Cam has to come out.. wonder how they came upon the oil pump being bad without pulling it apart??

only way to check that is to measure its clearances..

if the oil pressure is just lower than it should be then there are a whole host of other possible causes for that of which the oil pump can be a factor but not always..

I'm pretty sure they just do the oil pump while they're in there rather than button it back up with the old one. Fine by me. One less thing to worry about.
If the head is gonna come off, then the head gasket will have to be replaced, so that's one less thing to worry about.
But I wonder if while the head is off, how much $$$ it would be to go ahead and put new orings on the sleeves. Probably unnecessary but I'm curious and would like to replace everything the old coolant came into contact with.

Probably makes sense to change it if they are in there. They are not particularly expensive, unless they break

With who knows how many miles on it I was going to insist they used a new or reman pump set.
I couldn't find much info about this stuff on the web, but what I did find seemed to indicate that they always put in a new oil pump with this type of repair.
Since the air compressor is driven off a gear in there, I wonder if it has to come out. A reman is only $350 + core so if I could get them to swap the compressor for parts cost that would be awesome.

True that just like I changed my oil pump this past spring since I had the whole bus in pieces anyway. , it can’t hurt and diesels need to oil well.

This is an issue I never knew affected these engines so late in the game. Thought it was mainly a late 90s issue, very engine has its Achilles .. and we find a lot of those Achilles here since our busses are all used
