I have no idea what that engine is but unless it is brand new out of the box and has Ferrari stamped on the side, you can kiss my a$$.

the problem was the standing voltage coming in at 11.4. before i even tried to start the bus... if cold was the issue then id have expected my first shot at 5 seconds to have warmed the batteries up..

I still have the 2 batteries (unless someone stole em outta the back of my pickup).. they are batteries Plus.. I was thinking they were generics. but couldnt read the labels till i fgot the hold-downs off.. so I'll make a run over and see if by chance they are warrantied.. if so cheaply then I'll get another set and have them for House batteries to use or i could drop a 3rd in.. the DEV batteries are going on 6 years and they are generics.. so in worst case I'll have a good set..

you are right its worth testing them for CCA and Load before I recycle them away. its worth the trip to my local batteries plus.

when I put the new ones in it sure spuin over alot faster.. took a while to start because the computer seems to lose its memory. and every time I have disconnected it cranks long before it starts (even in 70 degree weather)..

this AM was warmer..(+9) so the bus kicked right over.. but the minus 7 crap comes back tonight / tomorrow night (then goes away for ???{hopefully ever}) so if it starts then Ill feel better about it..

I Shouldve installed the webasto...

its the navistar version of the infamous ford 6.0, I definitely wouldnt pay that for it.. thats just what a dealer quoted the poor dude (who overheated it off. the scale)...

whats scary is i can buy a ready-to-fly computer to flywheel 707 Horsepower hellcat engine for like 22k....

Bigger question is how many CCAs does it take to get you running in negaties temps. Get your skinny little a$$ back to FL.

On your way back to FL, feel free to drop that heater off at my place.

I dunno what the Ford 6.0 is other than their pickup truck engine but that's what I'm talking about. The Z06, 911, or 6.3 AMG should be hitting the $27k mark. The AMG might be higher but the generic sports cars are cheaper than that. For that kind of money, I'm going to go get a 15L truck engine.

When I was shopping for a bus, I met a guy who was basically buying cutaway GM buses with 6.5L diesels that had bad injection pumps. He was getting these otherwise great buses for a song because they didn't run, the fix was expensive, and the new units had a reputation of only lasting about a year. He was doing a retrofit of the 6.2L's pump, which has a much better reputation for lasting, and then sold them at a huge profit (3x his cost or better).

I wonder if a similar thing could be done with 6.0/VT365 equipped buses. They certainly have the reputation of being grenades. I haven't paid attention to their prices as I click next as soon as I see the engine, but I know they're well regarded after doing a bulletproof mod.

not to get too far off on this thread but the VT vs the ford does have a better reputation.. bullet-proofing is actually not too bad but the parts are pricey for it.. a true bulletproof involves pulling the heads... EGR cooler delete is actually a somewhat bad thing to do esp on the navisytar because therres no computer hack for complete EGR delete.. but an updated cooler can be installed.. the updated oil cooler can be installed..

the biggest flaw of it though is the internal plastic parts in the oil circuit.. you over-heat it to 260 degrees once and you ruin the block... throw it away ruined... even an over-heated DT-466E that dumps the coolant in the oil is an in-frame and not a throw-it-away... the weak link on the 444E are injector cup leaks and collapsed lifters.. both of those require pulling the head.. a slow injector cup leak can steam and ruin a piston however the block is generally not destroyed..

sure wish we could find EC a spot to get his bus to work on it.. I think this might be a lot easier to handle at that point.

The main problem with the ford 6.0 is the plastic parts in the EGR cooler, if those are replaced, the engine is pretty good

Just FYI ECCB the offer to help with your bus still stands. I've got some bonus constraints (broken GF!) but if you get a plan and we can find a place I can be parked I'll do what I can to make myself available.

Shaun just came over to tell me that he "doesn't want me to do anything rash" and that we can park it and work on it as long as it takes at his place.
Gonna call the tow guy after lunch and arrange to meet him over at the dealer tonight.

Good news

I wish I were 1500 miles closer. Plenty of room here, tools too.

Is it Shawn or is Shawn's dad that you need to worry about?

Some good news! SO glad to hear you have a place you can work on it. I am sure that lowers the blood pressure some. Now the bad news:

So you're going to give this thing a try, eh? Good on ya. It's bad, but it ain't walk-away-from-it bad.

Tell you what: get it to Shawn's, and I'll buy you that goddam $20 CD full of PDFs. Could it hurt? PM me when you know this is a go and we'll move forward on it.

Do you see that? The NAPA wedding gift registry is growing. It's another new years miracle.
