We floridians are a hardy bunch, I guess.
Our house has AC. Its set on 80. The Subaru has "ac" but rolling the windows down is about as effective.

After this year we won't own a vehicle with AC.

I dont own vehicles with "ac". I only own vehicles with "AIR-CONDITIONING".. ha! if it cant keep my cool with the windows open then its not real A/C...



I revamped the unit on Redbyrd and now it pushes out 37 degree air at the vents on high speed fan.. im thinking that MIGHT keep me cool in florida summer trips..

Since new, our Subaru Crosstrek's ac system has been MARGINAL at the very best. Its a total joke.
Shaun's fancy, uncomfortable new truck has pretty crappy ac compared to his old 03'.

You guys realize we have this discussion every time I buy a new auction vehicle, right?

I would like to get the ac working in the 04' bus we own. But its got other problems that make ac not relevant.

yep the AC in my silverado was JUNK too... the 03 silverados had wicked A/C..


thank the wonderful government .. the CAFE standards require that the MPG's be tested now with the A/C turned on..



the manufacturers shut the compressor off when the air is just barely cool enough to sort of cool in a mild climate... its possible to make them cold.. I did a bifg write up on a chevy forum with how to mod them in my colorado i had.. and did it for my Honda civic also.. my chevy malibu isnt bad..though when i had it in tamps last summer I was not real cool.. that car goes back to the leasing co this winter so I didnt mod it. and for some reason my dodge ram truck is wickedly cold.. cold enough that water runs down the dash whe ni run it with the windows open... most of the newer stuff has crappy ac.. the vans like yours when A/C equipped were kickass cold.. I remember driving the one I had as a work van and being able to freeze in them.. your IC units will push wicked cold once that bus is rolling again..

I do more than just sweat. And I'm from FL so ... I got rid of my B2600 because the AC died. The computer was shot too but AC was the main reason I didn't bother with it.

Its been frustrating, but comparable buses sell for ten grand and up all day. We have had a typical "skoolie" setback but this newest bus will fill the void nicely till the IC is fixed.

I spent my childhood outside, and we had 100+ acres for me to play on. I played sports all my childhood, and now I mow and walk many miles a day in the FL heat.
I've been in it so long I guess I'm just not as affected as folks who work in offices up north!

Wasn't until my 20s that I started to notice. That's also when I started an office job so there might be some truth to that. Building electronics, the temp and humidity had to be kept in a certain range. The building had 3 humidifier units that were almost never used and 5 dehumidifier units along with I dunno how many AC handlers.

I dont run the AC in my house till i want to sleep at night.. unless it gets up to about 85-90 inside then ill turn all the zones on and drop it QUICK.. (my AC can go from 5000 BTU up to 51000 BTU.. for a 1400 sq ft house..).



but when im in a BUS with all that engine heat blazin out I want my A/C big time! I use it in my car some, if im on the speakerphone.. actually in the car its always on blowing cool air on me even though ill often have the windows open because i like the fresh air..



I'll also use it in the car aftyer im done with my many mile walks, or mowing, or working outside etc.. then ill use it like crazy.. my perfect summer "Office" is outside on a patio someplace with the laptop.. Most office buildings are Freezers in the summer and I hate them..



to sleep at night the AC is Must have.. its one reason I dont camp..

I have NEVER been cold at work. The run away water chiller that had the lab at 54° was a little chilly but livable.

Then you haven't hiked enough miles.


That is the one thing I worry about if/when I do a thru hike; PA in July.

Most just skip over the PA part. I've heard its pretty sketchy in some parts of the AT in PA.
A friend of mine has done the whole thing at least six times!
The ticks and fleas are what would dissuade me.

As a start, yes. I would also like to do the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), the CDT (Continental Divide Trail). Triple Crown. If I'm still in a hiking mood, there's the NCT (North Country Trail) as well. There's NO skipping in thru hiking!!! You have to "embrace the suck". It's called Rocksylvania for a reason. I've done bits and pieces of the PA stretch. Port Clinton and north is where the real rocks start.


It's not that they are giant boulders and requires scrambling or anything technical. That can be found in other locations of the A.T. (ME, NH and VT). It's that you're legs take a beating because you are never standing level. Twisting and turning even if you don't sprain an ankle. Your feet get beaten from the edges and points.

The ticks and fleas are what would dissuade me.

Ticks are a HUGE problem in ME. Something like 75% of the moose have Lyme disease I think. Permethrin and DEET. The black flies of ME are supposedly nasty too. It's all part of the suck. Anyone can do a 2 mile day hike when it's sunny and 65°.


I've not heard of fleas being a problem.

i'll stick to 10 mile city "hikes" where the only "ticks" are the panhandlers always hanging off you nagging for $$...

Be it city trails or long trails, I need to get out more often. Buying the house in MI, along with the weather ate up spring. I'm back to working on the bus again. There's only 52 weekends a year. The gf is out of PTO for the year. I might need to join a gym again. Fat and lazy at the office. Would be nice to change that to just lazy.

Mow some lawns on the weekend for extra cash. You'll be in shape real quick.
