I haven't actually gotten under there and looked at mine that closely, so I was wondering about this myself. Mine is a 4 speed. After Googling pictures of a 4L80E, I think that's what mine might be, but I've only looked at it once so far so I can't be positive about that. It does have a parking brake drum on the output though. I'm really not a big GM fan so I can't tell any of their trannies apart after the TH400s. I would much rather have a fuel injected Ford big block in there with an Allison tranny!

At a job I used to have several years ago, I worked on our company's F700 now and then and it had a carbureted 429 with an Allison behind it. Unreal torque with that setup! It was because of that truck that I ended up putting a 429 into my 2 1/2 ton military truck. I didn't have an Allison laying around so I had to settle for a 5-ton Spicer 5 speed.

I'm not so sure that's a bad thing. Sounds like your P30 is almost exactly the same size as my 51 Chevy. I had a floorplan drawn up for it that would have worked very nicely. Only thing that was holding me back was the ceiling height.

I love the ceiling height of mine!! I am actually thinking of raising the floor 3 inches... both for insulation value and to provide discreet storage space.

I just read this and I have two trucks and the CAMO-MONSTER with that same trans the sm465 a 1970 c10 a 1971 k10 and the CAMO-MONSTER 1974 GMC 6000. the 70 Ihave had up to 130mph it is stock and has 3.08s. the 71 k10 has 4.56s and will only do about 75 if I realy push it. And the CAMO-MONSTER is a ( ? ) it has gm t170 two speed rearend and has 9.00"/20" and the damn speedo dose not work right now. Andfor the 4l80e it is the reaplasment for the th400 with overdrive and the tail shaft is simuler to the th400 with 6 bolt tail shaft cone. If I had to have a GM 4 speed auto the 4l80e and NOT THAT CRAP THEY CALL THE 700r4 !!!

Any automatic in a GM/Workhorse chassis Stepvan or minibus after about 1991 will be the 4L80E. Prior to that it will have a TH-40 or TH-475. Nothing this big got the TH-700 (though there ARE people using them now).

The 700 is a great transmission. They work in everything from trucks, to Corvettes, to street rods, to 2-ton Chevelles with 502 big-blocks, to a Super Bee with a crossrammed EFI 426 Hemi. Yes, I absolutely did just say it has a crossrammed EFI 426 Hemi. The guy with the Bee also has a 20,000lb tag-axle Pace Arrow motorhome...and he runs a TH-700 behind a 454 in it. (He owns a trannsmission shop that specializes in 700's.)
