I will keep that in mind, would have come in pretty handy lots of times already!

I added a 3oz can of oil up front and an going to add another today. The system was only open for a few minutes while I swapped from a to b, so I don't expect much moisture got in, the old compressors failure was mechanical failure at the clutch. The oil in the old one looked like new. Not ideal but I don't expect immediate issues.

Grease

Brokedown's GF here. When the love of your life changes the AC compressor (THANK YOU!) but gets grease on your fresh paint job.

Just back up about 15 feet and that grease will hardly show at all. If that AC is working and it's hot out, he gets a pass in my book. Stern warning?

youd be surprised how quickly moisture gets into an A/C system. (I did this for a living for about 8 years).. your oil was fairly clear you should be good.. as far as how much you put in, depends on how much came out.. the oil works its way through the system, there should be a few ounces in the compressor when its replaced. if you let the freon out(recover) through the Low side you usually dont lose much oil.. if a lot of oil comes out with the freon then I usually figure the system is mostly full and just add 3 ounces to the compressor and call it a day.

a slow leak on the high side will slowly leak the oil out along with the freon.. usually easy to spot as heavy dirt spots on the condensor or lines going to it. most often slkow leaks are the O-rings in the connections.. next time you have to recharge one, replace all the O-rings and you may very well never have to touch it again for years.

I put in new o rings already. The specs for these compressors indicate 8.5oz of oil, so adding a second can will put me at 9 total. Given the size of the system I can't see that extra 0.5 bothering anything.

it all depends on how much was left sitting in the coils.. alot of oil will sit in the various coils and any "traps" in the linesets.. it settles after the system shuts off... and will redistribute when you run it again. quite a bit will settle in the skirt mounted condensors.. and some will sit in the bottom of the evaporator.. some evaporators are designed with the suction ports coming out low on the coil itself (no trap) and the oil from there will travel to the lowest point in the lineset and hang out. that oil will be picked up slowly as the freon velocity increased.. and if any liquid freon is left at the end of the evaporator it will pick that oil up.. of course the liquid in the condensor picks it up and moves it along.. I go alot on how oily things are when I take one apart.. esp when the compressor isnt the low point in the system. if its fairly dry ill add a decent amount.. if its pretty oily, ill pour out the compressor into a pyrex cup and put back what I poured out..

Where are you guys now? We are still figuring out our route, even with dual air conditioners we can't mess with the nonsense happening in Arizona right now!

I thought the kayak was sitting low on the water, surprise a crack in the hull letting water in! I wonder if I can make a friend with a heat gun near Topeka?

Fishing is not great, evidently this lake is all about catfish and we are all about not catfish. Free camping though.
