Sweet potato genny upgrade

My skoolie food truck customer has scored a pretty big event coming up and has received word that they have to come in under a specific noise level to qualify. They purchased a new generator and now we need to get it installed.

We're quite set on a back deck to mount it. Some of it I'm not very thrilled about, but I think that it will preserve the integrity of the bus frame and the generator also in the long run.

Their current generator is mounted under the body on the driver's side, but this new model is FAR less capable of that setup in basically every way. It would have been ideal for how quiet it is.

Flopped on the ground this evening and found some previous repairs made to the rear of the frame rails. Done as well as possible I think. I'll get better photos of that tomorrow.

Plan on starting in the morning.

Let me know of any questions or concerns or references if you have any!

I've got the main framing mocked up.

I'm going to get some beefier hardware to throw in there after I found out just how awesome my step bits were gonna be at powering through the steel I bought.

Gonna add fish plates where I notched the channel and some cross bracing.

Gonna make a center brace between the two inner rails and have a support come up from the hitch to give a helping hand to the overall strength.

Decking supports and then decking will be secured after that and then a cage for the generator will be last.

Interested in seeing the final outcome for this project.

How did everything work out?

It's been something!

Got carried away for a bit and welded my cross bracing crooked.. busted it back apart and continued on.

Currently working on the tamper proof cage to house the genny.

I'll get some better pictures after some more progress.

Also got a piece of metal in my eye working on it.

Keep your safety glasses on even after you're done cutting, grinding, or drilling.

I went from drilling with a face shield to the impact gun without it and had a bad time.

Sorry to hear about the eye injury! Hope you got that lined out! I'm interested to see what you do for tamper proof cage for the generator. Do you plan to add any more insulating features to it to make it even quieter? Or is main goal to keep it from getting stolen?

I was planning to build a housing for my generator on back platform but haven't done it yet. I was also going to build isolators in so the vibration would be less than with it strapped down tight to the platform...
