After seeing how simple the design was on my buddies toy hauler, I figured it was worth a shot... Wait until you see what I have planned for the upper bunks... After you made yours, it gave me an idea...

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! I really like your approach of building everything with metal instead of just wood. If I ever do another bus conversion I'll definitely consider investing in some new tools and doing it that way. I'm sure it will last longer and the assembly will stay tighter with all the movement and flexing from driving on uneven surfaces.

I can picture the scene--at least this is how it would be for me:
"hmmm"
the wife-"you got that look-are you building that in your mind right now?"

Re: The Dirtybus...

Thanks for the comments guys...

The flooring I was looking at is a foam diamond plate workout pad that comes in 2'x2' squares that go together like a puzzle... The bus will get used a lot in muddy areas when we're off roading... I want something we can take out easily and clean out the dirt... I might go with that flooring and cut it to the shape of the bus... Thanks for the tip...

Re: The Dirtybus...

What I had in the back of my cube van race car hauler worked perfect-it was flooring for a horse stable. About 1/2" thick rubber. It was slip proof even when wet-extremely durable (I'd think nothing about sliding a motor or anything else on ) and oil would clean off with just a shot of carb cleaner.

Re: The Dirtybus...

Suggestion: looks like you have about 3-4'; of unused space under that sofa/bed beside the wheelhouse. Any skoolie, especially a shorty, you will want as much storage as possible...what about a drawer? I'm thinking something like what was often used underneath waterbeds.

I bet you could whip up the track using stuff leftover from building the sofa bed.

Steel studs

I really like the idea of using steel studs for framing in the bus, straight, strong, light weight, and easy to work with.

As for storage under the couch, I agree, you always need more, could you enclose the base and just make a access door in the partical board under the bottom?

I really like your bracket fabrication. I also like your Werner platform. I bought 6 of them at black friday this Christmas at Lowes, 20$ each, and gave them out as presents. I kept two.

Re: The Dirtybus...

Thanks for the comments guys...

The sofas will get closed in and the seat will be hindged so it will be all storage space under each of them... The stands are awesome, I've had them for 6-7 years now...

Haven't done anything to the bus lately, because we had a storm up here... We usually don't get a lot of snow, but we ended up with about a foot... Then came the frozen rain and caused a bunch of trees to go down... Power has been on and off, lost the parts shed out back with a bunch of the bus parts... Got some cleaning up to do... Everyone is fine, just been a big pain in the arse...

Re: The Dirtybus...

Interesting looking bus, specifically the short rear overhang. Looks like you're gonna have a nice rig.

With such a short tail you won't have the problem I did during my last trip in my Winnebago. I attempted to enter a Kmart in Davenport, Iowa, the entrance to which was a straight shot from the side street I was on. It was late at night and the parking lot entrance was a ramp that was much bigger and steeper than it looked. I was only going about 10-15 mph, but...you guessed it... the front and back bounced over that thing and the tail smacked the pavement. The grey water tank, suspended by sheet-metal brackets, got shoved upward about an inch and cracked. It now leaks when more than about a third full. Lucky the bottom didn't crack. Better yet, the black-water tank didn't get touched...and was empty at the time.

I had accelerated across the street from a stop sign. Good thing it's impossible to to hit that ramp at 30+ mph unless one is stupid enough to run the stop sign across the street.

Yeah, mine is pretty nimble...

Well, haven't been working on the bus for awhile... Been doing a lot of work on the house lately... I did pick up a counter top for the bus today... Ten foot with a little damage at one end... Got it for $108... It'll be perfect, 7' for the galley and 3' next to the fridge...

Have to admit I am not seeing any damage there!

Re: The Dirtybus...

Jarlaxle, the damage is really hard to see in the pic... I'll try and get a better pic of it, but it's not bad at all...

So, I had a chance to do some work on the bus... Started insulating the walls... The plywood was just on temporarily... Also picked up some indoor/outdoor carpet that will get glued to the plywood and then installed over the foam...

Re: The Dirtybus...

How much foam are you using in the walls?

BTW... I've lusted after your bus ever since you started posting. Awesome build. Hopefully I'll be able to do mine half the justice you've done to yours.

The foam is 1.5" thick...

Started to glue the carpet to the wall panels...

Re: The Dirtybus...

Man, I used that OSB plywood for my bunks and it emitted a strong smell for months and months. It's probably still affecting the smell of the bus, but I've just gotten used to it!

Re: The Dirtybus...

It's probably the glue they use to make it... This stuff has been hanging out since June, but now has a new glue smell...

Just eat more beans and drink beer, that'll give the bus a different smell...

I picked up some carpet transition strip today to secure the panels to the wall... Gonna start installing the pieces I have done today...That will allow me to move stuff out of the way to tear down the other side in the back and get it done... I want to get the back sleeping area kinda buttoned up so I can focus on the galley area...
