Re: The Dirtybus...

Started taking out the windows today...

Had to get after the rivets, so I can skin it...

I thought I hated rivets when I was building the Blazer...

Then I went and bought a bus that has a million rivets...

The old windows are great for tree forts or hunting blinds.

Re: The Dirtybus...

Yeah, it let a bit of a breeze in...

I picked up some 20g sheet metal that will be skinned over the holes... Two sheets 4'x6'9" for $40...

Then I'll cut some of the pink styrofoam and stuff it on the inside for insulation...

There will be a couple of windows, but they will be cut in after I find some decent RV ones...

Re: The Dirtybus...

Nice work...your floor was in better shape than mine. I had to replace three (small) sections. Well...not like I didn't expect it on a New England Genesis. Very nice job so far...though I recommend keeping at least one heater if you plan ANY cold-weather use. The heaters throw lots of heat.

Re: The Dirtybus...

I still have the big heater by the front door... You don't think that will be enough???

I thought I'd share this with you guys...

OK, when the wife got home last night she said her car was acting funny... She came around the corner and it started running like crap and had no power... I told her I'd take a look at it tomorrow...

Well, she drove the Jimmy to work so I could look at her car... Did some stuff around the house, then made lunch for me and the boys... Started working on the bus, then after getting tired of grinding rivets, I took a break from it...

I go inside and grab her keys, head out to take a look at her car... I figure, I'll run it up and down the road to get an idea of what going on... I turn the corner and it runs out of gas...

Fixed...

Re: The Dirtybus...

It was to dark to get pics of the other sheet installed last night...

We'll get the drivers side done today and start on the passenger side...

On of my neighbors gave me some pretty thick galv sheet... Think it's 12 or 14 gauge... I plan on using this to make the side door disappear... Another freebie...

Re: The Dirtybus...

Did you put any sealer along all the joints? My preference is a urethane based sealant. Stays relatively soft and paintable.

Nope...at least, not unless you have a completely open floorplan and maybe not even then.

Re: The Dirtybus...

I found an RV Salvage yard that just opened up out in Bonney Lake...

They have a good selection for just getting started and the prices are really good...

I picked up 5 windows, all have screens except for the one that is non-functional... $100 for all 5...

Also bought a 21' awning for $150... It's complete and in great shape, only has one tear about 2" long at the end right where it attaches to the RV(easy fix)... I still need to find a way to get that back to the house... I don't have a way to tow the car trailer until I put a hitch on the bus...

I also picked up a roll of some sound dampening insulation from a buddy for free... I might use it where the old bus windows used to be... Thanks again Matt...

Have to go out and get after some more grinding and cutting... Nothing exciting, but has to get done to start the cool stuff...

Re: The Dirtybus...

i really like the shorty flat nose....

im considering a shorty conventional nose (well mid size)...

ive been scared away from the flat nose types because i read they are much harder to work on them and therefore more expensive to do so (engine work)...

but i really like the way that looks...

Re: The Dirtybus...

Went and picked up the 21' awning yesterday... Thanks for the assist Dustin...

Got the side door off and gonna start grinding away at the rivets, then rebuild it so it has the same shape as the rest of the bus... I would never be able to use the side door with the awning open and I really don't want to work around it with the floor plan...

Re: The Dirtybus...

The stove came today... I pulled out the slate that I'm gonna use for the hearth...

Gonna build a riser with storage underneath for fire wood... Thinking it'll be about a foot tall... Then some corrugated metal for the walls behind it that will be mounted away from the wall about an inch and a half for air flow...

Re: The Dirtybus...

Nice stove. How's slate compared to fire bricks when used as flooring under a wood stove? And how thick is that slate? Good looking, a lot better than staring at all this firebrick I've got sitting around here.

Re: The Dirtybus...

A lot of hearths are built out of slate... I plan on using a fire proof adhesive and a dark grout... Then seal it so it looks wet and the colors will pop... I've done a lot of slate work for customers and everyone loves the depth of the colors after it's sealed...

I'll probably use hardi backer under it as well... That should help with heat dissipation being made from concrete...
