I woulda gotten you a transmission jack if I'd known you were gonna need one!
Next time I'm at HF I may just grab one for the hell of it.

I dunno if there's a weight difference between the 643 and the 3060. I've not crawled under a 3060. The 643 looks damn heavy. Nice flat bottom and I have a shop jack. Dragging the shop jack thru the dirt/rocks at the RV lot would make bench pressing the tranny in place look easy in comparison. Sheet of plywood would be worth more than its weight in gold at that point.

EC actually never count on any one piece of gear.. even when I use jackstands. Always in pairs or leave the jack at slight pressure as well..

Wowsers 643 is a heavy bastard. That thing must be built for a tank! And it still just hangs off the bell no cross member?

I think the MT643 needs a cross member, if it goes in my bus it will get one somehow

Looks like you are having great success with your trans swap. With the allison programming can you do tap shift and tow/haul like the gm application allows? I am building an 86 chevy crew cab that I put a 5.9 p pump cummins with an 06 1000 series trans behind it. Its using the gm system on it as 4 years ago when I started on it allison didnt have anything available for tap shift or tow/haul that I could find.
I must have missed it in your thread but what did you do for a tps signal?
Great work on the conversion and documentation of it!!

Just need to convince Chris that he needs a 3.90 rear end for that fancy 6 speed, so I could get his 3.54 for my bus

oops I missed this.. sorry!..
I dont have tow haul enabled but I do have tap shift.. I used some parts from Custom automatic Conversiopns (CAC).. for the TPS.. I pull the voltage signal off my existing pedal which is electronic.. and it goes to their box.. I learned their magic box simply speaks J1939 to the TCM. im on a 4th gen TCM which does have analog throttle inout capability but requires a TPS that outputs PWM and not just a 0-5 Volt like my navistar does.
CAC does a lot with 5.9s and 4BT's with allison 1000s behind them. I may be the first navistar that has gotten up and running with any of their gear..
im thinking I may build my own go between box, so I could take into account other data that navistar provides me on the J1708 link to formulate a better TPS value than just a pedal position.. and it may be that the TCM accepts other strings too.. i need to learn more about what data is sent across that J1939 in a true connected-trans environment like the later version T-444E / DT-466E. when the 2000 was supported.. though I think only 2nd and 3rd Gen TCMs were used. I know they dont speak GMLAN like the GMCs do.. those are a completely different flash in the TCM.
of course info is a bit guarded. only because with some of the experiments im doing get close to the "secret sauce" of some of these aftermarket companies...
NO ONE right now in a standalone environment on an electronic engine takes into account the cruise control... in a 4BT or mechanucal 5.9 you still have a throttle cable.. the TPS still moves.. in my situation my pedal doesnt move so the trans assumes im off the throttle and goes purely on speed and its internal torque sense.. so it takes a while to downshift on a hill...
my ECM provided a modulator output for the old AT545 trans.. basically it closed a relay which went to the AT545 electric kickdown modulator.. so i played with a little circuit yesterday.. in which I used that relay to provide +5 volts to the TCM wire that came from my pedal.. I used a Diode to keep from back-feeding the ECM with 5 volts and sending the bus at full power.. and it worked... using the scan tool I saw 120% TPS.. which is an over-value.. I really need to send like 4 volts because thats how I told them to calibrate it... it definitely pushed a downshift..
id like to only use this when the cruise is on..
this is a promising thing though for electronic cruise vehicles..

Hey Christopher,
What app are you running on that tablet that displays engine & tranny data and will it play with my Cummins equipped 2002 Bluebird?
Also, what cable/adapter do you recommend? I have seen them range from $50-$400...
Thanks and keep up the good work.

what a cool idea!! I was thinking of having mine gone through anyway.. I know it needs a pinion seal, figured at 145k id want to make sure the preload and lash is correct on it..
wonder how we find out if its just a matter of unbolt em, move them over and bolt them up..
whats the GVWR of your bus? we should be able to figure out osme reaer info via a dealer and our VINs.

does your cummins have a round gray connector for the computer diagnostics?
that particular one i use is called VMSpc by silverleaf electronics.. it doesnt do a lot of diagnostics,.. its mainly a digital-dash type program and adapter.. I believe it will work with a cummins as its designer built it for diesel campers which many have cummins in them. it wont allow you to change parameters like vehicle settings or anything.. just display.
for diagnostics i use a NEXIQ USB link 2 (a Pro style interface).. im not sure if cummins has a free version of their software or not..
im working on building my own at some point so I can have multiple screens in various places and replace the crappy Navistar gauge panel altogether.

Thank you Christopher,
I have read that I have a J1708 connection somewhere. I have not found it yet.
My goal is to build a HUD so that I can watch key parameters without looking at the dash. I also want a text display for coolant and tranny temp.
I would love to see your implementation of a multi screen "glass cockpit". That would be most awesome.
Thanks again.

I never realized the 8.3 was electronic.. you have an MD-3060 transmission? if so that will have its own capabilities to be read as well.
