I've since discovered Edison Motors in Canada, and their business model revolves around putting the engine output directly into a powerful electrical generator to charge the batteries at level 4 fast charging, then shutting off and running full electric for 2 hours before firing up again.

You get all the benefit of electric (big batteries are great for RV power, all that torque, no shifting, regenerative braking, fuel savings) and all the benefits of diesel (fuel density mostly). This is the route I will go when I start my project.
