Legal Tanks
Is there a legal requirement for what kind of tank I use for my WVO? Can I strap an old diesel/oil tank, say from a house's oil tank, under the bus? I'm beginning my conversion soon but don't want to purchase a tank that won't be legal/safe.

Since you won't be opertating commercially there are few rules and regulations that will apply to you.
Getting insurance for something that doesn't comply with all of the rules and regulations could be a problem later on.
Used fuel tanks would be the best choice since they are already DOT approved. A house oil tank would not be approved for use in a vehicle.
Definitely mount them under the floor. YOu really do not want to have any sort of fuel tank inside the passenger/living compartment. Not only will it smell but it could become a fire risk.

You dont any kind of steel tank with wvo. I have a plastic tank out of a boat under my bus. And your best bet with using wvo is "dont ask -don't tell." DMV doesnt want to know-insurance doesn't want to know-cops don't want to know. Every now + then some agency will want to crack down on tax evaters + look for dyed fuel in tanks-and if you got caught when they are busting balls-you get into the whole"not taxed/not considered a fuel/etc." argument. There is no "legal" tank-and safe is up to you.
Fire risk? The one thing I've discovered over the years-the last thing this stuff wants to do is burn. I've joked for years that I should market a veggie oil fire extigushier!

Fire Extinguisher
They already make a fire extinguisher for WVO, it is called the K class. It is supposed to be a kitchen fire extinguisher for grease fires.
I am adding 2 100gallon aluminum fuel tanks from semi's for my WVO system, one for diesel, one for WVO. Will remove the 100 gal. steel tank to allow for more useable space. I also plan to carry up too 3 55 gal. drums (plastic) near the rear wheels for traction.

My mom might disagree with you on that subject. It seemed to do a good job on the kitchen.

All it takes is heat, and veggie oil burns like gas.
Just like coal. Hard to get burning till you reach a certain temperature. Then good luck putting it out.

The growing popularity of 100% electric cars will soon make them rethink that . . .
