2-cycle Detroit Diesels are great engines and the pre-DDEC mechanical ones are still being built for military service.
Two real problems with 2-cycle DD's:
- They usually use about twice as much fuel to go a mile as a 4-cycle will use.
- They are really old school and finding anyone in a regular truck shop who really knows (versus saying they know) how to work on a 2-cycle DD is getting pretty difficult.
Prevost buses of that vintage did not overheat as readily as MCI's of the same vintage. One big radiator mounted at the bottom of the skirt works a lot better than two little ones mounted way up on the sides.
