1984 Eagle Bus
Hey everyone! My wife and I have been in the process for almost a year of looking into a Skokie conversion. During my search for a bus, we ran across a 1984 Eagle Bus. Spoke with owner who is selling it. He says it run great. Only 174,000 miles. My wife and I live in Missouri and the Bus is located in Alabama. The guys is asking $5000. Help me out. What other questions should I be asking about the bus. What should I be worried or cations about! I have spent hundreds of hours reading threads from everyone and I’m grateful for all the expertise and input from everyone. Looking for any help or advice I can get. Thanks!

I'm no expert, but if that runs and drives it would appear to be a really good deal unless there is some major malfunction with the bus yet to be discovered. I'd expect to see that bus for sale at $18 -20K, but I don't appraise buses.
If that's they type of bus you want, I'm guessing that's a pretty good deal at $5K.

A little more info. Please.
Motor,transmission and location.
Depending on your state your regular driver's license might not allow you to drive it.
Might need to upgrade your license unless it is already titled an RV
For example my regular license is only good up to 26,001 pounds.
I like the looks and depending on the motor and tranny I think it would be great.
The older stuff is getting harder to find a mechanic that knows how to work on them.
Good luck

Gasser? I take it back. Who would put a huge gas engine in one of those? That's silly. It does make sense about how low the price is though.
Worth an engine swap?

I’m nervous because that price seems just ridiculously low of something isn’t wrong with it. Got to call the owner back tomorrow before I make the 600 mile trip
It is a v8 Detroit diesel .

I think I'd buy a one way ticket to the bus with $5k in my pocket. Well, you're going to need gas money.
If you can test drive that bus for at least an hour so you can get the temperature up before laying down the cash it would be really good. It sounds like a sweetheart deal though, with the diesel. At $5k I'd even consider putting another engine in it.
Try asking the guy point blank "What's wrong with it?". For all the influence I've got over your budget, I say buy it.. It looks cool.
Are you looking for a road machine?

A big 2-cycle diesel? Some folks swear by those. Detroit Diesel has a pretty good reputation and the 71 series was introduced around the same time they invented trees.

For my 8.2 Detroit whether turbo or not is getting hard to find a mechanic to work on and a two stroke Detroit that I would love to have but won't have any mechanic here to work on it.
Either way I am thinking of going back to school for diesels.
Did it in the 80's and then joined the marines before I got my CERT.?
Cheap is knowing how to work on what you own?

I'm mostly familiar with the 6-71, I almost bought a boat with two of those on it that still claimed to be a sailboat!

A rig that age, you've got to expect to be replacing a lot of seals. Everything rubber will be old and cracking. Those are just cool looking.

the major problem that Eagles have is the torsion bar suspension, parts are literally un-available, if the suspension is good, and it foes not look collapsed in the picture, that is a hell of a deal

Additional questions to ask, do you need batteries, what shape are the tires in, when was the fluids last changed.
You could hire someone to check the rig out before you make the one-way trip as well as hire someone with the proper license to drive it back for you.
Just a thought.

Ok, thanks everyone for all the feedback. Now another question, what would you do with the exterior of the bus to make it look nicer?

Are you looking for a more complex response than "paint"?

Ha no. Should have been more specific. Can I/should I paint the bottom half of the bus or leave it the metal?
