Converting 1995 Gillig High floor Phantom
On May 1, 2018 I got a new bus! 1995 Gillig High Floor Phantom. Full size 40 Ft.
I like that I can stand up inside the bus, I am 6 foot four. I love that it’s nice and wide I think it’s 102 inches, it has an air ride suspension it’s a giant diesel pusher, and drives 100 times smoother than my last school bus!
I bought it outside of Salt Lake City, it used to be a city of Salt Lake transit bus, and drove it back to Atlanta. What a great trip, I got to see the Grand Canyon which I had never seen before.
It looks like they put a new engine and transmission in it in 2006, I’m not exactly sure when I took it out of service.
It is a Detroit diesel series 50, four-cylinder, 8 1/2 L diesel engine. With an Allison transmission.
I’ve spent the last 4 1/2 months converting it and I should be 99% finished on Saturday! I still can’t believe it’s finally coming close to being finished
The plan is to park it 50 weeks a year at my friends house and rent it on Airbnb. So, I dispensed with water storage tanks, propane heat, and propane cooking. We are using electric heat, electric air conditioning, a two burner electric cooktop, hooked up to city water and sewage.
