It started snowing over here and I suddenly remembered that I had no antifreeze in the floorheating.
We were lucky , not frozen yet and no damage. While running the webasto heater I added a gallon of red boiler antifreeze ( non toxic) and drained a gallon of water. Made a nice picture but lost my phone in the snow, can't find it and no cell phone reception out there so no locater either.
Of to verizon to get a new one. May be I find the old one when the snow melts.

You're further "north" than the map would indicate but wait 3 days for it to melt?

dory transfusion
Another free parking on the street football weekend. It is nasty weather but early in the morning it was good and I picked Dory up..... and found my phone back.... pulled the memory card ... and yes it works, so here the last upload.
The webasto tsl17 is mounted in that cavity. The hose is actually normally coiled up and is the expansion " tank" . The red in the uncoiled hose is non toxic boiler antifreeze.

Wanted to work some on Dory. It was about 30F here in the morning but she started first crank. Filled up tank ... $302,, but got a free coffee .
In our street the snowplows put a pile on my side of the road. I have steers on all wheels and so I thought that I would get stuck. Had to raise the bus up to not bottom out.
Thawed the phone out and it still worked, amazing..

Steers are the ones with just the circumferential tread? My rears have real treads. I think the fronts do too. I believe mine are all the same and I know the rears have tread.

Figured it would. Drop it in a puddle and maybe not but snow shouldn't bother it in the least.

all-positions are usually what they are.. and they have a lot less tread than tires that are sold as strictly 'drives'.. my red bus has all-positions on it and its pretty terrible in the snow.. my carpenter has uniroyal RD30 which are 'drvies' and they have a really nice tread pattern.. that bus is pretty darn good in the snow.. some guys like all-positions simply because in the event of a flat steer you can pull a wheel off a rear and move it to the front to get you down the road a bit. (assuming you arent loaded to the hilt)..
treaded drive tires are noisier than all-positions. and just like Jeep tires will get louder as they wear.. real drive tires are often good for 100K plus miles..

Apparently I lied. When it comes time for new tires, I'm getting everything with real treads like the current drives.

bob thats hoiw my DEV bus and superior are set up.. gnarly drives and all-position steers. I think they do sell specific steer tires, i just dont know of most using them.. im guessing in large fleets, esp in southern states where bad weather isnt an issue, all-positions are used because they can be swapped around as needed..
Gnarly drives make your bus sound cool in my opinion..

I might have to go bus tire shopping in the U.P. but I want the tread all the way around. Driving thru snow (and/or mud) with just chains on the rear makes about as much sense as steers on the front.

1) It's a bus. 2) It's an old bus. 3) It's a diesel 4) It's an 8.3L... It's going to make some noise without ever moving!!

Dory hatch skylight
Well mine are all steers, nice and quiet. Just do not drive in the mud or snow.
Today I made a skylight in the original escape hatch, same as I had done with Elfie. This time no holes and all sealant adhesive. Will see how it holds up but I love the light coming in .
It was to cold outside or in the shop for the adhesive to work with so in the living.
Originally I had dimensioned the hole in the hatch for a fantastic fan in but I like the light better. Now I think I can make new hole in the roof for the fantastic fan.

Better to err on the side of caution but I don't want a little snow keeping me from going somewhere.

That sounds like a whole (no pun intended) lot can go wrong.

Dory outside fold down table
Haha. I think pun was intended but no worries I will leave the Fantastic fan out for a while. Not to many flying bugs in the south west desert and not so arm in the winter that I need more ventilation then I have already.
It was a little warmer today and wanted to get something done. From our old 4x4 ambulance we had removed the running boards and I as going to haul them of to the scrap after 10 years of laying around.
Last minute I decided to give them a new chance on life. Quite a bit of band saw cutting to remove the lips so that two could be bolted together.
I need to make a couple of braces to give it more strength and would like to make an outdoor outlet so that we can connect an induction cook top outside
Maybe better to have a pull strap / chain on each end and a brace in the middle.

What's it's purpose in life? Looks like a food truck now; what's on the menu?

Yammie stuff .
I think for us being on the road does mean outside. Cooking inside adds heat ,humidity, kitchen grease to the bus. Better to do that outside like a summer kitchen.
Someone else had made a table on the side of their bus. Liked the idea and so this is our version.

Dory hatch skylight
While i as working to make racking for more solar, the spare tire, potential wind turbine my sweet came along with coffee. peeking thru our just installed skylight.
We were joking that people looking thru windows in hatches were always dying in the movies, sucked out in space, flooded with water....
Today the SS hardware came in to bolt the uni-strut thru the roof . Then I can start experimenting with a spare tire lift.
Unfortunately our small bus Elfie busted a corroded rear brake line so I have a difficult time getting bigger parts from the hardware store.
