Bad squeak at steering stem / wheel
We just recently put a few miles on the bus (maybe 50?) after it sitting for a long time. The last time it was moving I don't remember any noise coming from the steering stem / wheel. If there was one it wasn't enough to notice. But now there is, and it seems to be getting worse fast.
Any time you turn the wheel there's a loud squeak / creek sound, with a little bit of vibration / inconsistent friction that can be felt in the wheel (for all I know the vibration is normal. It does not in any way match the intensity of the sound).
I can impact the sound, including making it go away almost completely, by side-loading the steering wheel (pulling one side towards me & the pushing the other side away from me while turning).
I'm assuming this is probably just a loose steering stem nut, but wanted to check with the pros here to see what you think to see if I'm missing something. Power steering fluid is within range & pump seems to be working properly.
One thing I did do during the down-time was lube the steering stem zerk fittings with the same grease I used for the chassis (mobile CM-P). Any chance I used the wrong lube & this is a problem? The grease fittings were all in the firewall / lower stem area, however, and this noise sure seems to be coming from right near the wheel.
Also, if you agree that's what it likely is, any idea how the OEM steering wheel cover / horn actuator comes off? It's a 2003 IC 3800 bus. And what the torque value might be for the nut? Is this an issue of bearing play and if so how to I set the proper amount?
