If I had added cruise control to any of our 1078s/1083s in the motor pool I would’ve probably abused it haha. I hated how stiff the accelerators were on those trucks.

Switches have been pulled from a donor Fld120 with a 3406E of the same vintage. I will be pulling apart the dash harness today to see if the dash connector is has is the same. Fingers crossed that it is

No such luck. On the FLD120 the CC wires disappear into the main loom of the harness and reappear at the chassis connector.

I will need to wire them directly into the ecm connector. Next weekend I'll take a stab at it.

Also consider wiring a potentiometer in series with the throttle, attaching a self latching relay to the brake light and just spoofing the throttle signal.

We'll see what I end up doing...

Spoofing the throttle is dangerous self latching relay or not, not because you can’t stop but the computer doesn’t exert as much effort into maintaining RPM as it does for speed on cruise so the result is lots of speed variance as you make even the slightest incline or decline .. the cruise also tells the computer to push the info to the transmission , if it’s a 3060 or 2000 then the throttle modes change when going for cruise vs dead foot driving, with dead foot you’ll reach an eventual point of downshift but not as active as cruise..

Cool good to know. I guess I'm pulling the chassis connector off this weekend and having some fun.

On a side note how to I attach the pins into that thing to make a solid connection. Do I need a special cat tool?

CAT may sell the tool, but chances are the connectors were manufactured by someone else.. I think molex made some of them...

I will go buy the pins from cat this Friday then. Thankfully cat is right near the yard where I keep the bus. I will take a look at this wire assemblies too

Success. Switches are in and it works. I didn't even need the ecm connectors, the wire were already there. I just spliced in and connected up the switches

Oh and I forgot that I had to use cat ET to enable the CC.

If you don't have access to a laptop and j1939 interface, you will have to pony up and pay for an hour of shop time to reprogram literally one parameter. Its the "cruise control low speed"

You disable it on a cat by setting low and high to 127mph. Initially my CC didn't work. I set the low limit to 35mph and that was it.

I followed this exactly. Used a 4 conductor multi core wire run up through the firewall to the dash and connected to the wires from the switches. I still am amazed how easy this was. Thomas said it couldn't be done. The hardest part was physically getting to the body connector on the ecm. It's really burried.

The computer belongs to a friend's mechanic who leaves his service truck at the yard and lets me use it when he doesn't need it

I am eventually going to buy a toughbook and a nexiq so I can use it on the road but this works for now and you can't beat the price.
