DT vs Cummins Mechanical Replacement Pro-Con

Hey all
Had to take a break. Engine caught fire ans in the process of a rebuild. Currently I have a DT466E high hp & torque (250/800) and the harness and engine bay burned.

I am debating the engine with an an all mechanical engine replacement. So far, my thoughts are DT466 pre ‘95 or a Cummins 8.3 mechanical; rebuild as necessary

The desire is to be closer to 350hp and I just don’t know enough about internal parts to know what P pump adjustment limits there are for internal engine parts and what’s available.

Any thoughts on what you’d do any why? Pros and cons? The bus was originally available with 8.3 and an option, and a DT530 is hard to find but would be another alternative as it’s the same physical size as the DT466 with a longer stroke.

2002 IC RE3000

TIA

If you're rebuilding whatever you use, go with the international. Much more common and cheaper to rebuild in my experience. Look for an ngd p-pump engine from the mid 90's

Ditto the advise on a DT466.

Should I be concerned with MFG Hp build? There are a lot of 190HP out there and few 250s.

Yes

Internal components can change based off hp. You can change/upgrade them in the rebuild, but things are much easier to reuse then to source new or used.

At least find a high torque model. Probably won't be found in a school bus.

Remember if you crank up the power level from stock you may need a higher capacity Cooling system.
