Yes! And when fueling at a truck stop, you may see the option "Truck, reefer, both" ... This is done to keep truck and reefer fuel separate for fuel tax reporting purposes. Reefer fuel is eligible for fuel tax credit (since it *IS* technically classified as off road use) and companies get a refund for the fuel tax paid on said reefer fuel.

For many straight trucks, they use the road fuel tanks. On road trailers, rather obviously, they have their own tank. Some straight trucks have a separate tank, most often it doesn't justify the extra cost/weight.

Yeah I’ve seen the screen ask me that , but there’s only one handle, does it add the dye automatically when you press reefer? Or just prints you a report so you can file with the govt for a refund?

No, it remains undyed, and you still pay the pump price (road taxed). You have to file IFTA fuel taxes to get the road taxes refunded/credited.


I've not seen a truck stop with the appropriate dye, and there's too much chance it would cross contaminate fuel that should not be dyed.

I have seen red diesel at a number of truck stops. Complete with very bold signs indicating that it was for refer/off-road use only and big fines if you use it as road fuel.

Heck, the service station down the road from me sells it.

Like I said- everyone here but me is running the red stuff.

I have never run red diesel on the road. I have bought it to run in my kerosene heater.

The penalty is significant if you get caught and I have been pulled over and checked.

Come to WA we have medical and recreational.

Red is not sold near the city here but get into the small towns where farmers are prevalent and it’s everywhere, used to be people ran a few gallons of K1 in diesel cars to help with gelling, they had K1 even with road tax and without when diesels and Kerosene heaters were the rage in the early 80s, I hardly see a K1 pump anymore. Diesel in a kerosene heater is smelly and smokier then K1 so I won’t use diesel for heaters unless they are heat exchanger vented type

I *HAVE* been checked, and caught. The farmer I was working for ran it and lo and behold Ye Old Tax Man was at the scalehouse checking (on a Saturday, no less). I suspect someone (who knew the farmer and had a grudge) was a whistleblower and I was just the poor driver that happened to get caught.

I got pulled over on Main Street downtown Dayton by an unmarked red F150. Completely random.

I thought the on-road diesel was ultra-low sulfur, and cleaner. I have asthma, and like clean air (dispight now owning a diesel). I would always use the cleaner burning fuel.

Red dye diesel is no longer a different product. It's on road diesel with dye instead of road taxes.

We had a lady bring her nice new Mercedes into our shop because she "went to the gas station and filled it, and then it wouldn't start." We found gas in the diesel tank. Fwew. Then again, the quality of German cars in the late 1990s and 2000s dropped so low, we wondered how anyone with any sense would buy one. We saw a 2001(? or so I think) that in 2004 had a short-circuiting wiring harness that fried the computer and half the sensors. Plastic radiators and fans were made of brittle plastic that caused overheating and blown head gaskets. Brittle plastic all through the vehicles, in fact...
Then I moved from Hotlanta and big money, so I can't say about now-a-days (loved Nissan since the 1970s, hate my mom's new Versa).
