Hub Oil Question

I've never seen anything like this. My hub oil is a greenish gray with dark green spots in it.
Planning on changing it today but wanted to know if anyone ever saw any like this or knows what's up.

Right, that looks like the sort of green slime you see around the edges of the docks and such.

Definitely looks to have had water present.

I'd drain, and flush with a solvent, then refill with clean oil.

Maybe make sure the bearing aren't trashed by seeing if the end play is in spec.

Put a little of the green stuff on a white paper towel and let it dry out in the sun. If it is biologic, it should die and change color.

Its almost surely water contamination. Smells strongly of gear oil.
I picked up some 80w90 at tractor supply. I'll change the oil tomorrow.

So how high are they supposed to be filled?

Pull the rubber stopper off and the oil is supposed to be right at or slightly below the rim?

Not that much. About halfway from "empty" to the bottom of the hole. Some covers have a pair of "lines" (circles), the outer denoting "minimum" and the inner reflecting "full".

There's a line. Bout a quarter inch from the plug.

I drained it out and refilled with some cheap gear oil. Spun the wheel for a bit then drained and refilled it.
The drivers side oil looks new it was just the passenger side. The drain plug has a magnet in the end and it did have a bit of metalic debris stuck to it. Nothing large, but not very reassuring. I pried on it a bit with a bar and can't feel any noticeable play in the bearings.
Gonna monitor this and think about getting the bearing on that side replaced.

Since my hubs came spray-painted I don't have any lines to see...

Filled up is how far below the bottom edge of the plug?

One of mine looks like spraypaint may have got inside!
