Hey man, it's not unappreciated by some of us We look at educated answers like the one you gave like it's manna from above. Keeps us from doing things we oughtn't be doing and shortcuts we oughtn't be taking!

Sorry to inconvenience you reading all this. I have no experience in kingpins, couldn't tell one from a clothespin.

We are not all as gifted as others.

John
Think he was talking to OP, who he advised 10,000 miles ago to do it the correct way.

Maybe but does not read that way to me. Thanks for your reply, I have no idea what he means and was trying to understand this repair myself.

there are a lot of different ways to repair things.. I still didnt get how he got a bolt in there without damaging the thing permanently, never able to hold a wedge correctly again...

Jatzy has it right though, Kingpin bushings are a wear item.. the axle is not, nor is the pin itself... theoretically when you notice the play in the kingpins you disassemble it, change the bushings and you dont have to change anything else.. let it go too long and now you start wearing into other parts.. and of course ruining tires at a much faster rate as the alignment is out...

how long will they last? how well are they kept lubed and how clean was everything when it was reassembled and is the Zirk kept clean so when you inject grease you arent injecting abrasive dirt in as well... how rough of roads, how much cornering on rough roads, tires out of balance or bent rims causing a lot of front end shake? all ways king pin bushings can wear faster.

John it wasn't about you. If you have questions, by all means, ask away. That's why we're all here, to ask and answer questions. Just don't ask for advice, receive the same correct advice unanimously, and then do the wrong thing.

If you have a bulge in your tire sidewall, and drive on it for 10k miles, does that make it a-okay?

What about bale twine holding together a tie rod end for 10k miles? No problemo right?

Some things you can skimp on, and some you shouldn't. A bolt, no matter the grade used, won't hold the king pin in place properly. The correct draw key will wedge the pin in place holding it securely.

Thanks Booyah, feeling better but still am an uneducated moron when it comes to front ends and steering components. But I like going under and greasing it all up.

I do believe in doing things right or not at all if possible, so would likely get it towed in if anything happened on the trail.
I have learned a lot though from your comments, as well as Chris and Jazty's also. So thank you all for your inputs.

I have changed a number of kingpins in my life, no hurry to do more.

Tapered bolt the proper one for your axle, please. Risking yourself ok, risking someone else not ok. Get it?

Greasing kinpins, I like to do it every oil change, and if possible I like to jack each wheel up just enough to take the load off so the grease can go all the way around the kingpin

This new post actually just makes you look a cockwomble

so you're still not dead, bully for you

your repair is still dangerous and incorrect, and honestly you're risking others lives IF it falls apart on the motorway, but hey what do you care. you saved a buck.

and although you are getting away with it I do not see why you need to pop back in here and make fun to the ones that tried to advise you

thats just being a prick

not cool, and next time you ask any questions good luck getting a reply. we'll likely be ignoring your cries for help

but hey, you're the man
