I've had similar myself...driving home from the desert wondering why my mileage was so bad and finally noticing I was in 5th gear instead of 6th.

Yeah I just wasn't familiar with the different gears at the time and now I know and have since used overdrive which got me to a smooth 55mph. Noticed a little dip in the gas mileage but it was for a 30ish min drive so I was just trying to get there in a timely manner. Worked well though so I'm proud of her!

Daimler owns Mercedes and Thomas. I live in Ontario with a Thomas built bus that has a Mercedes engine. The nearest Thomas dealership is 40Km away. It's not cheap, but getting service is no problem. So you might check on dealerships near you that would service a bus you are thinking of buying.

Mine is a 2004, six cylinder 6.4 liter engine. Apart from 9mpg mileage, I love it. Lots of power, and it will cruise at 65mph no problem.

I think @rossvtaylor had a customer near Vegas having all sorts of issues getting decent service on a Mercedes diesel? I don't recall the particulars with their model but he started a thread here.

Yup, that was recent. They broke down in their Freightliner bus with the MBE900 (or a 905?...I don't know these engines well) here in Flagstaff. We're right off I-40 and a major truck route, but none of the local shops would touch the engine...not even the Velocity Freightliner service center here. After weeks of searching, even Coach-Net realized that the closest options were either Phoenix or Vegas...several hundred miles each. Thank goodness they had Coach-Net (which was fantastic, by the way).

Great post! As one who is about to pull the trigger on a FL with a 906, was wondering what special tools you carry in case you need to do FI or other repairs while traveling?

I think the most special tool would be a comprehensive listing of new and used parts dealers and also dealerships that would work on them.
Service manuals would also be on the top of my list.

Then, standard set of metric wrenches.

For what its worth, MB engines are run all throughout central america, mexico, guatemala, honduras, so if you can find a stateside mechanic who lived/ worked in central america that would be a plus!

Just purchased a 2006 Thomas HDX with a Mercedes engine. The previous owners built it out and told me they had no problems finding mechanics to work on it. Not sure if that was just to try and sell me on it but they seemed like honest folks. They were also clueless about engines so they went to the shop for every little thing
