new to forum Power steering question

I recently purchased a 1985 gmc vandura/ward short bus. While sitting in park or at very slow speeds, engine running, when I try and turn the steering wheel its pretty difficult and seems to kind of bind up and squeal. While I am in motion at a little faster rate there doesnt seem to be any binding or squealing at all. What could be the cause of this? Is the power steering pump getting weak, or is the best possibly slipping? Any tips would be appreciated thanks!

Have you checked the fluid level and condition? You may want to flush the fluid as this will sometimes quiet them down. What happens when you increase the engine speed while sitting still, does it still turn hard, make noise?

Every vehicle I buy, the power steering fluid is one of the first things I change along with oil change and trans service. No one ever changes the PS fluid. It usually comes out black or close to it. Do you have a diesel?

Gas motor, chevy 350. As I increase speed it doesn't seem to bind or squeal at all, just when I am sitting at a stop or very low speeds like backing up.

Oh I am sorry I misread, I will have to check to see if increasing the engine speed while parked changes any thing. Ill post soon thanks for the advise.
