Power steering fluid for my 99 444E

Hey guys, What type of fluid goes in my 99 7.3 navistar engined bus. It doesn't look like regular power steering fluid and I need to add some. The sticker on the side of the canister is too faded to read. I read somewhere that it may be ATF? Really?

My T444e bus was using engine oil for power steering fluid. Not unheard of, but I since switched to ATF to make diagnosing leaks easier (red colour).


I'll try to remember to go out to the bus and see what ATF fluid I'm using. The sticker on the fluid reservoir listed 2 approved fluids, but they are obsolete at this point. I found a compatible ATF fluid.

I am going to SUCK some out of my reservoir to check as well. Not really, I will use a straw though.

Well, don't know what is supposed to be but it is indeed ATF in my bus power steering. I will fill it with the ATF. Thanks for the help.

Apparently even engine oil works, along with ATF, all depends on the manufacturers recommendations.

Call an international dealer.

ATF works great as a hydraulic fluid which is essentially what your power steering needs. I find that it’s a little thinner than a fine oil so it flows easier when cold and doesn’t make some pumps whine when cold. And I think it is somewhat better at not foaming up than engine oil but that probably doesn’t matter much for
