I'm aware of problems caused by pollution control after 2004, but did they, if they did, what year did the problems get sorted out?

Depends on the engine. The DT466 from 04 and up were pretty good even with the EGR system. The Maxxforce 7 and Maxxforce 10 never got it right. Cummins even with the emissions are not bad either. C7 Acert Cat is not as reliable as the older models, but not horrible.
