Rear Axle Lateral Offset?

2002 Thomas Saf-T-Liner ER

I noticed a few weeks ago that the rear axle on my bus appears shifted to the passenger side. As far as I can tell, all 4 rear tires are the same size, as well as the wheels they're mounted to. However, the outside of the tire on the passenger side sticks out about 2 inches from the body, while the one on the driver side is flush with the body.

Is this normal? If not, how does such a thing happen? Can it be corrected?

If you have air springs/ bags then the axle should shift a little when in the lowest or highest position. Also possible that the track bar bushings are worn.

Good luck

As Joe suggested, is this bus an air-ride rear axle? Usually there is a bar which allows the axle to move up and down, but controls side-to-side movement. If the suspension is fully deflated from being parked, it could allow the axle to offset to one side. I'm willing to bet the axle would be centered when aired up normally (or should be at least). Also, as Joe suggested, the bushings in this bar could be worn (somewhat common).

I do have rear air bags and the air system is completely empty. I'll air it all up and have a look at those bushings too.

Thank you! Merry Christmas!
