I would use a rear diff out of a front engine, run the drive shaft up over, passed the diff, to all the space under the belly. That's where the tranfercase would be. From there you would run a shaft to the front, and one into the now forward facing rear diff.
One more mod that would be fun, would be a front and a rear engine bus with tandem rear diffs. Front engine would run the forward rear diff, and the rear engine would run the back rear diff. The power of two 8.3 Cummins for up the hill (2000 foot pounds of torque) and breaks on three axles to slow down when going back down the hill.
There are also places that make lockout hubs for big stuff. That way when one engine is shut down on the flats, that diff would be free wheeling.
