runs rough. B700.

Our Skoolie runs so rough. '88 B700. How can we make it not so loud!

I was going to just tap a hole in the intake and jam a hose from my big propane tank onto it.

put a valve up in the driver's cab.

When was the engine last given a complete tune up and injector check? Properly tuned it should be smooth and get the best mpg's. I'd be inclined to try that before propane if for no other reason than adding anything to a bad running engine is really not a fix.

What motor is it?
My 86 b700 has an 8.2.
Which one Is the issue?
Is it running rough or is it just to loud?
Two completely different issues.
Two completely different fixes.
Running rough you can fix.
To loud you can dampen the sound but only to a point.
A front engine dog nose diesel is always going to sound like its screaming at you while on the road cause the engine is in font of you and you are traveling forward into the sound.
Minimize idle time.
Unless the bus is already up to operating temp.
And then it's a difference of opinion on if the idle time is good or bad.
A rough running engine can be several things?
If it is running poorly what sounds are you hearing?
Big clicking/clanking/clattering noise?
Or just the motor is loud and you can feel the vibrations throughout?

Gonna play stupid on this one??
And for your engine? Where is the best place to just tap the intake for propane to get it to everything?
I have always heard that diesel fuel also adds lubricity to the cylinders? Am I wrong?
The SDS's that I have read for propane say not to mix with oil?
How are you planning to inject this into the motor safely?
A propane tank in the cabin with a valve?? Don't you need CO2 monitoring for propane indoors?
For the tank itself are you just going to sit it next to you so the valve is in hand?
By law doesn't it need to be secured?
Many more questions???
Please respond back cause I have issues you might be able to advise me on also.

IMHO: If there is an underlying issue with the engine you should troubleshoot and repair the issue before making further modifications.

As far as propane injection goes, there are numerous kits that keep the propane out of the passenger compartment and have various safety features to keep you from blowing yourself up.

Loud and idling rough are two different observations that are usually mutually exclusive of each other in a diesel engine.


When you refer to loud you have to define what sort of loud are you concerned about. Sometimes if the loud is at road speed a major source of the loud is the sound of the cooling fan being turned by the engine. If the loud is particularly annoying at idle then it is more a lack of sound deadening more than anything else.



In regards to idling rough, what do you mean by that term? Most diesel engines, particularly when they are cold, will shake and rattle something chronic until they warm up. Some engines, like the Cummins 6BT, will just shake and rattle something chronic at idle speed--it is in their nature to idle that way.


So knowing what engine you have, what is defined by loud, and what seems rough is further information that is needed.
