Water in Fuel

Hi all,

I just bought a short Chevy 2000. When I start it a light comes on that says "water in fuel". I'm guessing this is fairly common for a bus that's been sitting for a couple months.

If someone could tell me how to fix this and how to prevent it that would be great! I've researched it a bit and it seems there are products I can add to the fuel should I use something of this nature? Do I just have to drain the water collection underneath the tank?

Thanks,
Brendan

You're on the right track. A good fuel additive should take care of the water issue in your tank. Whatever the truckers prefer in your area will work fine. If there is a water collection bowl you should drain that also.

It's not unusual for all the idiot lights to come on during startups. Often your gages will sweep side to side during startup if you have gages.

You likely have a water/fuel separator with an alert. Follow the fuel lines and see if there is a fuel filter type canister with a drain on bottom. If so, just open it up and drain the water out. That's how mine is set up...but without the fancy (handy) alert system.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'll try looking for and draining the water collection bowl then maybe add an additive too just to be safe.

I'll let you know if that works

I drained the water collection, quite a bit came out. It was really easy to find and to drain. The "water in fuel" light doesn't stay on now but my boss has an additive for diesel fuel so I think I'll still put that in too.
