So I’m comparing a CAT 3126E engine with an Allison MD3060 transmission, and a T444E engine with an Allison 2000 transmission. They’re both 65-70 passenger dog nose front end, similar age and mileage. Any thoughts on on longevity, expense, wear and tear, ease of driving on the highway?
3126 is going to drive nicer and easier to work on. T444E will have cheaper parts but it will be somewhat underpowered depending on your application.
Transmissions are largely a wash, both are solid ones with the edge going towards the MD3060 if you can electronically unlock the 6th gear for better highway driving.
I'd go with the Cat powered bus assuming everything checks out.
I can tell you my T444E has treated me well so far. It's the 230hp, high torque model. They come from 175hp to 250hp, so you might want to make sure what hp rating yours is.
Per the trannies, both are solid from all I know. The only thing I think you should check is the ratings of both. I pretty sure you'll find the 3000 series is designed for higher loads. So, it would make sense that all other things being equal, the 3060 would be a better choice. If it has a 6th gear that can be unlocked, then that's icing on the cake.
Unlocking 6th does sound cool! I like the power of a CAT but I heard they’re hard to work on and expensive to repair. Would getting one be worth the maintenance and expense? What about a DT446e with an Allison 2000?
