Stranded in Des Moines with Transmission Prpblems
I am halfway through my cross country drive in my 7.3L 1991 Lewis mini bus. I am being told I need a transmission and I am so, so bummed because I took it to not one but TWO transmission shops before leaving California, due to what I perceived as noisy shifting and an intermittent flashing overdrive off light. Both told me I was worrying too much. I have friends at home who could have done the work for me, at least saving me that part of things. I don’t know what I am going to do. I have put so much into this bus, and I am just about exactly halfway from anyone or anyplace I know. It seems right now like my only choice is to walk away, to find some other way to get me, my dog, and everything I own to the east coast, and to dump my beautiful bus. I don’t even know why I’m writing this, it’s not going to make a bit of difference but I guess I just had to vent. I’m so sad and lost right now.

What is occurring? Fluid dumping out? Doesn't engage anymore? I am In Bellevue Ne, just 2 hours from you.

Won’t shift into lower gears, they pulled it and said one of the seals came off while it was being towed because it was totally worn out. I don’t know if I am saying that right because I’m not a mechanic or even close to one but according to this shop there are no bandaids that can be applied. The cost to rebuild is $2600. But worse than that, it doesn’t sound like I would be able to sleep in it while it’s being worked on, which will take a week because of the age of the parts they need to get. So I would have to pay for a hotel, and of course I’m here during the junior olympics where every reasonably priced place is booked. On top of that, I have my dog with me.

working on it
so far, in your area $2600 seems about average for trans with 3 year warranty. Seeing what else I can find. nearest transmissions ready to go are about 150 miles away. rebuilt with warranty. I will message again when I know more.

start calling
look up shops by distance... call closest ones first then work your way out.... skip ones that have reviews 50/50 good to bad. want a shop with 80% good reviews or better. find a place that you can stay in the bus., They exist, you just have to find them.
I am working on trying to find alternatives.

Trans model for that bus should be an e4od.
Did you try shifting it manually? The electronics on these are picky. Drop it down into manual first and see what it does.
It could be a shift solenoid... could be wiring.. could be a speed sensor or tps...
Was it slipping at all? Shifting hard/late?

What does it do when you manually shift to first? Just slip or nothing at all or..?

Thats what I was thinking. I have a working on my property. But its somewhere north of 200k miles. Probably not worth the work to swap.

Solenoid was my first guess. But all the things you mention have been investigated and ruled out. it behaves as if it is in neutral when manually shifted to first.

She's spent from the sounds of it.
You can swap in anything up to '97 2wd e40d. Needs to be from a diesel.. and if its from a powerstroke, you'd need the idi torque converter and possibly the solenoid pack/harness.
Otherwise, sounds like a rebuild is in order.

E40D Trans. Its in my brothers F-250 w/7.3 IDI.
I would just worry it would break like yours with the mileage.

here is what I did
Feel bad for you.... here is what I have found so far...
f-250
www.car-part.com use the menu for 91 ford f250 non superduty 7.3 2wd
then select transmission....
best i can do from here... found a 92 truck here in kansas for 2500 but I think if you are going to spend that kind of coin, you are better served getting rebuilt transmission....
I have face book requests out at the moment but no responses yet. I dont know of any one I know in your locale, I am hoping for a friend of a friend thing.
