2 SPEED REAREND

I have a gmc bus and it has a 350 in it and was thinking of trying a 2 speed rearend. My question is would it be worth the trouble to put one in? Does it make a big difference in gas mileage? And if so what should I look for for what model rearend should I get that would fit?

Also I have a 79 gmc vandura motor home with 400 big block do you think the running gear trans and rearend fit the bus. I'm sorry for all the questions but the only dumb question is the one not asked. Thanks a million for any information

Re: 2 SPEED REAREND

Not sure specifics,I have only seen 2spd rears in 1-1/2 ton and larger and they have a fairly large gear split that a SB might not have enough torque to make work.

Not sure exactly what you want to achieve, a 4spd tranny may work better

As for drive train swap in the same size vehicle with only a few years difference should be bolt in,350 and 400 if both small blocks are the same,so moving tranny mount may be only issue( or it may bolt in)

Re: 2 SPEED REAREND

I have been looking in this as well. Only reason why I have been considering it is that I need to lower rpms maybe at highway speed. Not sure if it will be worth the money to do it but we will see.

Re: 2 SPEED REAREND

Yea I lived in mine for the last 2 years with 2 kids and my wife it wasn't to bAd
The kids would get on my nerves every now and then but we were a real close
Family. Now I'm back on my feet financially and going to completely gut the old
Bus like I wished I could before I moved into it but life doesn't always go as planned
But we had fun living in the bus. Had a full size bed the kids had bunk beds. I made
A play room above my bed so the kids could go and play. Now I can't get rid of the bus
To many good memory's. It's going to be camping from now on. I'm going to change the
Whole lay out of the bus.

Re: 2 SPEED REAREND

I think it will depend on how much highway driving you will do. For me most of mine will be with in a 100 miles of home base so to swap out the whole rear end I don't think it will be really worth it for now. Who knows what the future will hold. From what I gathers its a pretty easy in and out as most GMC buses were on the 2 ton chassis format. So there are plenty of them from dump trucks.
